Marvellous Maths in Year 2

 Marvellous Maths in Year 2

This week in Year 2, the children have been continuing to build on their place value knowledge from Year 1, deepening their understanding of two-digit numbers through hands-on, practical learning. They have been using a range of concrete resources, particularly base 10 equipment, to explore how numbers can be partitioned in a variety of ways - for example, seeing that 46 can be split into 40 and 6, but also 30 and 16, or even 20 and 26. This flexible thinking supports not only their number sense but also encourages them to become more reflective learners, as they consider different strategies and explain their reasoning to others.

We have been particularly impressed with how resourceful the children have been when selecting tools and approaches to help them solve problems, often working collaboratively and showing wonderful reciprocity by listening to and building on each other's ideas. Of course, developing a strong grasp of place value isn’t always easy, but the children have shown great resilience when faced with tricky tasks, persevering and learning from their mistakes.

It’s been fantastic to see how their confidence is growing as they lay down strong foundations for the year ahead.
