Division in Year 2

The children have been super busy the last 2 weeks, learning how to multiply and divide.  They are beginning to use different methods to solve multiplication and division problems, such as sharing in groups, checking which multiplication table the number is in and using the inverse to find the answers.
The children have also been busy applying their knowledge to solve tricky word problems and choosing which method they prefer as well as checking their answers using at least two different methods.
Well done Year 2!

Change of spelling in Year One

Image result for spellings

Dear Parents/Carers,

At Broadford Primary we teach every child the importance of good spelling. We want every child to be a good speller and to take a keen interest in the spelling and meaning of words. To support this we have made some changes to the type of words your child will take home in their spelling test.

During their daily phonics sessions the children learn to read and write new sounds and words. They regularly practise spelling words with the sound they have taught and previously taught sounds.

The national curriculum also states that children in Year 1 need to learn to spell common exception words and high frequency words, you may know these as ‘red words’ from the Read, Write, Inc programme. These words often have to be practised more frequently as the children will need to remember the spelling pattern.

To support the children to learn to spell these words and apply these correctly in their writing these are the words they will take home to practise with you. The children will practise their spellings from Monday to Thursday and take their test on Friday.

The children will receive new words once they have spelt all of their spellings correctly on a Friday. If they still need to practise the words and haven’t spelt them all correctly then they will take home the same words to practise. This is to ensure the children really learn these tricky words and are secure with their spelling before moving on to a new set of words.

Thank you for your continued support. Please make sure you continue to practise spellings at home and remember to bring in your spelling books.

Yours faithfully,

The Year One Team

Year 2 Maths Stay and Learn

What an enjoyable morning we had in Year 2 on Tuesday, when the parents came along to the classrooms to find out all about our Maths learning.

The children enjoyed showing off their newly taught skills and I hope the parents were as impressed with the children’s knowledge of problem solving as the staff are!

The staff in Year 2 would like to say thank you to all of the parents who attended our Maths Stay and Learn session this week.

We hope that you found the session to be informative and that it provided you with ideas to support your children in Maths.

Year 2 had lots of fun experimenting with measuring to make their very own gruesome potions.
The children had to follow the instructions carefully in order to measure out the exact amount of ingredients, which included dragons blood and monster slime!
They extended their learning by writing their own set of ingredients before carefully measuring, mixing and making their potions.

Fire fun in year 2!

Rounding off our last topic, we had a trip to our local fire station. The children had a tour around the quarters and learned about what happens when someone calls 999 for the fire brigade. They also learned about all the different aspects of training delivered in order to help at traffic accidents, different fire types and even cats up a tree!

The children were shocked to hear the firemen spend 10 hours at the fire station every day! They enjoyed hearing the sirens, sitting in the cab, looking at the new uniforms, trying the water hoses and the heat detector.

Back at school we ended our topic with our grand finale- recreating the scene of the Great Fire of London! The children have been making houses- we put them close together to recreate this time and show how quickly the fire spread from house to house. We sang the songs we have learned from 1666.

The children are looking forward to our next topic, where we shall be looking at the history of Bonfire Night!

Theatre Experience

The children in Year 2 had an enjoyable time when a theatre company came in to help them experience life from 1666. The children enjoyed hearing about what England was like under the rule of King Charles 2nd and living through the plague and the great fire.
Later, the children had a workshop to aid their learning of the topic and learn extra facts, which I'm sure the children have loved sharing with you at home!

Did you know?

The fire wiped out most of London and this had to be completely rebuilt over 50 years!
In March 1667, Samuel Pepys wrote that he could still see some cellars that were smoking from the fire – six months after it was put out!
Lots of people went to St. Paul’s Cathedral to escape from the fire because it was made from stone – stone does not burn. But, some of the roof was made from wood, so this didn’t turn out to be a very good plan.
On 4 September 2016 a wooden replica of the 1666 city was set ablaze on the Thames to mark the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire
The houses that were rebuilt were made from bricks instead of wood, which doesn’t burn. The new streets were also designed to be wider, and sewers were installed so the city was more sanitary.
The great fire contributed to getting rid of the plague as it killed many of the rats which were assisting with the spreading of the disease.

Year 2- Outdoor Science

The children have been learning about bird life cycles and their habitats in their science lessons. Yesterday we took their learning outdoors and as part of their independent time we created bird feeders. The children had to read and follow a set of simple instructions and they worked together to mix a variety of seeds and fruit.

Reading Morning in Year 2

A huge thank-you to everyone who came to support our reading morning in Year Two. The children loved having you and were excited to be able to show off their reading to you and show you around their classes! In school, we teach the children phonics every day to help them learn sounds which they can pick out of words and this helps them to decode the whole word itself. We also teach 'tricky' words that aren't decode-able and these are taught as flash cards. The children then look for these words as they read a variety of books.

We also work on spellings and comprehension. When reading we look at how to select important information and how to answer questions about texts that we have read. As you may have seen in the classes this morning,  there will be a reading comprehension SATs paper to be taken in May. Your child will be expected to read a booklet and answer a series of questions about a variety of texts, usually fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

There are lots of things you can do to support your child with their reading.
Completing homework (15mins reading every day) will help your child practise what they have been learning in school and will assist with their speed, accuracy and comprehension- don't forget to always ask questions at the end!
There are lots of lovely online games the children enjoy playing- phonicsplay, phonicsbloom, bbc bitesize.
Online tutorials are also useful- we recommend you tube 'scratch garden' to help with grammar (and also times tables!).
Finally, all reading is helpful- so ask your child to help you read everything you encounter- shop names, recipes, shopping lists, DVD blurbs, train station stops- reading is everywhere!

If anyone has any questions regarding reading, feel free to email the team or ask for an appointment with your class teacher at the front office. We will also be giving out parent evening slots next week- look out for the note in your child's bag.

Many thanks,
The Year Two Team

Bird Feeders in Year One

Outside activities in Year One

This week's outside activity is Cheerio Bird Feeders.  A great way for kids to connect with nature, and a super fine-motor activity too!

Fine motor skills are the coordination of small muscle movements which occur e.g., in the fingers, usually in coordination with the eyes. These fun activities have been created so the children in Year One can have fun, be creative and at the same time build on the skills they need to improve their handwriting, cutting and other fine motor activities.

'Awesome imaginations in action last Thursday at forest school. A rocket was discovered and launched taking a few of us to explore the sights on Saturn. Homes were made for monkeys and gentleness was displayed as a ladybird crawled along a hand. What a great bunch of Year 1’s we have this term, I’m looking forward to lots more fun together.'
