Dear Parents/ Carers, 

Havering Music Festival: Friday 5th June 2026

On Friday 5th June 2026, Year 2 pupils will be visiting Hilldene Primary School. The pupils will have the chance to participate in the Havering Music festival where they will perform songs alongside other local primary schools. On the day of the trip, children need to arrive in the morning at normal school time (8.30am) and we will be leaving promptly at 9.30am and returning to school before lunch. 

Children should wear normal school uniform and comfortable shoes and will need to bring with them/ wear on the day the following: 

• A waterproof coat.  

• A hat and suncream (if we are fortunate enough to have hot weather). 

If you are able to volunteer and join us on that day, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

What We Are Learning: W/B 22nd September

 

Year 1: What We Are Learning 

This week our literacy focus book has been: Beegu, by Alexis Deacon

 

This week in maths, we have been focusing on counting on from any number and finding 1 more. We practised starting at different numbers (not just 1!) and counting on, which helps us build confidence in number sequences and prepares us for simple addition. We also explored the concept of "1 more" by using number lines, counters and real-life objects. The children enjoyed using their fingers and visual aids to see how numbers grow by one.

The children have also been working hard in Computing this week learning about how to stay safe online. See the separate blog post which gives key information about how you can support your child at home as well! Watch the children in Beech class chant the poem they learnt and see some photos of the posters they made.

In Music this week the children have been learning a new song ‘Hey you!’. The children have been learning about the ‘pulse’ of the music through interactive games, dance and movement.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work! 

Year 1- What we have been learning

 

A big Happy new year from us all in Year 1. The children have had a great full week back at school and have settled in well. They were all very excited to tell the teachers and their peers all about the holidays and what fantastic stories we have heard! This week the children have started a new topic in History all about Mary Seacole which they found really interesting, so we are looking forward to teaching them all about this historic figure. 

Literacy 

This week in Literacy the children have started a new focus  book called Traction Man. It is  all about toys and how Traction Man saves the day with the help of his Scrubbing brush! The children have completed Fact files of their favorite toys and have made predictions about what they think the story will be about using the front cover. 

Maths

In math this week the children have been learning about numbers, the value of numbers using tens and ones and how to write them using numerals and the words. The children worked really hard especially when writing the words because some of them are not decodable. 

Next week, the children will be revisiting Addition, but using numbers to 20. The children will be using the different methods like Number lines, part whole models and different objects to find the answer. 

Topic

History

In History this week children have been introduced to Mary Seacole. The children learnt about  her life and how she helped the soldiers in the Crimean War. We had some great discussions and the children had a lot of questions about Mary Seacole and the work that she did. 

Alice - ‘“Why did you become a healer?”

Jace- “ Do you have super powers?”

Alfie- “ Why did you go to the war?”

Noah -  “How did you heal the shoulders?”

Next week, Year 1 will be recalling information that they had researched by writing sentences and discussing what they have learnt with their peers. 

Science

This term our topic for science is Materials. Children will be investigating different materials, talking about their properties, if a material is waterproof, sinking and floating and why different materials are used for different jobs. This week the children have been identifying different materials and learning about their jobs. Would a piece of paper make a good raincoat? why? 

Computing 

Children have been programming the Beebots this week. They programmed them to navigate around a track, trying not to bump into the sides. It was also a really good way to teach the children about direction. Additionally, the children learnt about digital writing and the use of a computer keyboard. They had the opportunity to write their names  and sentences on ipads.

 RE

In year 1 we have been revisiting Christianity. The children discussed what Christian’s believe and what symbols represent Christianity. The children where able to recall what they learnt last term. 

Apricot Class started discussing weddings in churches, which led to some of the children becoming designers and making their own wedding dresses. If you are in need of a new dress please feel free to contact Apricot Class! 

Music Time!

We have been grooving in Year one with our new topic ‘In the groove’.The children listened  to a piece of Jazz and started to find the pulse and tempo. 

Forest School

A wet start to forest school for Year 1 today but with our hoods up and wellies on we didn’t mind. There was time to explore the site, splash in puddles, make some music and hunt for rocks. A great morning for Walnut class!

Year 1- What we have been learning

 

What a busy week the children have had. They have been putting in lots of practice for the Nativity but also completing exciting science experiments which I am sure they all enjoyed. Can you believe that there is only 3 weeks until christmas!! 

Literacy 

This week children have been retelling the Story of Pattan’s Pumpkin. They have been doing this by sequencing the story and then retelling the story in their own words. They have all worked had to remember there Capital letters, Full stops and finger spaces. 

Next week, Year 1 will continue with the second part of the story. 

Maths

Year 1 has worked extremely hard this week in math. They have been continuing to look at subtraction and where introduced to Fact Families. This can be complicated but the children tried hard to complete their work. 

 

 

Next week, the children will be revisiting Fact families and  having an introduction into 2D and 3D shapes.

Topic

Science

The week  had finally arrived when the children were exploring taste . The children took part in an experiment to find out different tastes like sour ( lemon), salty (salted crisps and olives) , sweet ( Raisins) and bitter( natural yogurt and dark chocolate) . It was very interesting to see that the children were very excited to try the chocolate, until they noticed that it was dark chocolate. This was a great way to show to children the different taste in foods. The children then wrote up the experiment with what they found out. 

Computing

This week in computing we have been looking at pointillism. Year 1 have been completing pointillism pictures using the paint app on the ipads and also exploiting this way of painting using paper and paint.  

Music

Year 1 has learnt the words for our nativity brilliantly. They are singing clearly and more importantly loudly. We hope you are as excited as us for the Nativity! 

Countdown to Christmas!!!

Christmas has landed in Year 1. The children will be completing different activities for Christmas and learning all about the Christmas story in RE. 

Year 1 Nativity Tickets & Costumes

 

Year One Christmas Celebration - Tuesday 6th December 9:15 am & 2.30 pm 

TICKETS

Each child will be allocated two tickets for either 2x 9:15am show, 2 x 2:30pm show or one of each. Please let your class teacher know what time you would like if you have not done so already.

The concert will take place in the Charlton Hall (Year 1 Building). You can access this hall through the gates on Faringdon Avenue (where the KS1 and KS2 children enter in the mornings). 

COSTUMES

Non-uniform: We ask that the children wear their own Christmas inspired clothes. This could be bright colours, sparkles, sequins, greens and red, Christmas themed or own clothes. 

Please do not purchase any items as children can wear non-uniform of their choice.

 All characters have school costumes.

Year 1 Christmas Concert Tuesday 6th December 2022

Year One Christmas Celebration - Tuesday 6th December 9:15 am & 2.30 pm 

It’s the time of year when we start looking forward to our Christmas celebrations and concerts. We warmly invite parents & carers to come and join us on these occasions. 

Therefore, to be able to accommodate everyone safely and fairly this year, every child has been allotted two tickets for their concert. We ask that you bring these tickets along with you on the day and our school prefects will be ready to collect them on the door. 

Please return the concert slips by Tuesday 30th November. You will receive your tickets on Friday 2nd December. Letters will be sent out on Friday 25th November.

Year 1- What we are learning

 

Year 1 has had a delightful week, being introduced to Geography and creating some pictures for remembrance day. 

Literacy

This week in Literacy, the children have been writing letters in the role of Pattan. They have been thinking about feelings and how Pattan is going to look after his pumpkin. 

Next week the children are going to be writing descriptive sentences using their adjectives to describe Pattan’s Pumpkin. 

Maths

The children have been learning about addiction  this week, they have been using different methods to count and show their workings. Next week, the children are going to be introduced to bar models and how to find answers using number lines.

Year 1 experienced their first Geography lesson this year. We explained to the children that they are going to be learning about the world in which they live. This week we introduced the 7 continents.

Science

The topic this term for Science is Animals (including humans). This week the children have been measuring the height of their classmates,  from tallest to shortest. We have also been drawing and labeling different parts of the human body.

Computing

This week the children are continuing to explore the paintz.app on the ipads. They have been using different tools to make a picture inspired  by the artist Piet Mondrian. 

A Visit from Theo!

Walnut, Apricot and Beech class had a lovely visit from Theo this week. It was pouring with rain outside so the children decided to give me a cuddle and read him some lovely stories. He was a very spoiled dog! 

RE 

In RE this week we have been learning about Christianty. The children have been looking at the story, The Good Samaritan and why Christian’s believe that this story helps them to be kind and helpful to other people. 

Music

Children have been listening to different types of music. This week they have been finding the pulse and learning the new song for the term. Over the next few weeks the children will be starting to prepare for the Christmas nativity. 

Remembrance Day

As this week marks remembrance day the children have taken part in activities and a 2 min silence to help them to understand why it’s such a special day. The children have created some lovely Poppy pictures using newspaper print and crate paper.
