Year 2 - 1666 Day - Wednesday 3rd June 2026

 Year 2 - 1666 Day - Wednesday 3rd June 2026

Portals to the Past | Catastrophe in 1666; The Great Fire of London

We are excited to share that on Wednesday 3rd June, Year 2 will be stepping back in time for a special “1666 Day” at Broadford Primary School!

This day is designed to bring our recent topic to life, helping the children to deepen their understanding through a range of fun, hands-on experiences. Throughout the day, pupils will take part in a variety of activities linked to The Great Fire of London, including drama, writing, DT and art. These activities will encourage creativity, teamwork and imagination, while reinforcing key learning from our recent topic.

To make the day even more immersive, we would love the children to come to school dressed in clothing inspired by the time period. Please don’t feel any pressure to buy anything new-simple, homemade outfits work perfectly well. Here are a few easy and affordable ideas:

  • A plain shirt or blouse with dark trousers or a skirt
  • A long skirt with an apron
  • A waistcoat or oversized shirt (belted at the waist)
  • Neutral or earthy colours (brown, cream, grey, black)
  • A tea towel or scarf worn as a head covering
  • Simple accessories like a belt or fabric sash
  • The aim is to give a general impression of the period rather than an exact historical costume, so creativity is very welcome!

We are really looking forward to an engaging and memorable day and we hope the children are just as excited as we are.

Thank you for your continued support.

Year Reception: What We Are Learning w/b 16th December 2024

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

Reception have been working really hard this week. Our focus book was: The Christmas Pine.

Here is what we have been up to: the children have had a brilliant week with lots of Christmas activities! They had lots of fun at the disco this week and played lots of fun games and enjoyed dancing to festive tunes. They all had a lovely Christmas dinner on Wednesday. The children enjoyed pulling crackers and wearing their party hats. They also took part in a Santa Dash and tried their best running round the school field. They ended a fun-filled week with a Christmas party in their classrooms where they played party games and had party food.

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. The children have all been assessed and are now working in groups based on this. Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

In Maths this week the children have been working on their number formation. They practised writing numbers 4-10. The children also worked hard on completing patterns and worked on one less with numbers 1-5.

In Expressive Arts the children enjoyed collaging.

Well done Reception for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

We wish you all a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year. Thank you for all your support and hard work this year.

Year 1: What We Are Learning

Year 1: What We Are Learning

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. Please continue to read with your children and work on their Spellings with them. Please remember to sign your child's Reading Record Book.

In Literacy this week the children have been planning story maps and retelling the story of The Snail and the Whale in their own words. Well done Year 1!

In Maths this week the children have been learning all about length and height. They compared the lengths of different objects in the classroom and measured each others heights. They recorded their heights on a height chart and discussed their heights.

In Geography this week for our Wow Lesson the children made and tested out their very own kites. This was also one of our Experiences in Year 1 and the children loved flying their own kites.

In Science the children learnt about evergreen and deciduous trees. They drew examples of the different types of trees and wrote sentences describing them.

Apricot class enjoyed taking part in lots of fun outdoor learning during their Forest School session this week. They also enjoyed marshmallows and hot chocolates around the fire pit.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your excellent work!

The children also had a brilliant time at the Easter Bonnet Parade and also enjoyed taking part in an Easter egg hunt

We hope you all have a lovely Easter Break and we look forward to seeing you all again for the Summer term. A big thank you to all the parents and carers for your continued support.

Then they enjoyed GO BONKERS day which was a big hit for all. Even the adults! We are sure that all the children had a fantastic time. A cold freshening Ice pop was then given to the children to cool them down.

It’s the time of year when we start looking forward to our Christmas celebrations and concerts. We warmly invite parents & carers to come and join us on these occasions.

Please return the concert slips by Tuesday 30th November. You will receive your tickets on Friday 2nd December. Letters will be sent out on Friday 25th November.

The concert will take place in the Charlton Hall (Year 1 Building). You can access this hall through the gates on Faringdon Avenue (where the KS1 and KS2 children enter in the mornings).

    Barleylands

Once again the Year 1’s have been absolutely amazing. Thank you to everyone for your support and for making this trip achievable. We had a fantastic time at Barleylands Farm.

The children loved feeding the animals and taking part on a tractor ride around the park too. Afterwards all the children were able to experience making their own pizzas. The children enjoyed the Field to Fork experience and Feeding the animals.

    DT

    DT

This term, our focus has been Food Technology. The children have designed, created and evaluated their products. From cake making to fruit kebabs. The children enjoyed tasting different fruits as part of their research. Afterwards they designed their own fruit kebabs. This week the children made their fruit kebabs.

    PE

This week, the children have been practicing playing parachute games. These games involve the use of a parachute to exercise the children’s muscles while strengthening their arms and shoulders. Most importantly, parachute games develop team-building skills and reciprocity.

    Forest School

Walnut Class enjoyed their final morning of forest school  for the year today. They toasted marshmallows, made them into s’mores and enjoyed eating them. They made woodland warrior wristbands with all their favourite things from forest school. They finished off by sharing their favourite memories from the year, these included watching the tadpoles in the pond, climbing, using the hammocks and of course eating the marshmallows.

    Story Telling

This week some children have been making up their own stories to read to the class. They have been fantastic to read, but also a little bit scary!
