Year One- Week 3 's Celebration Certificates

Week 3's certificates

It's that time of the week again when we celebrate so of the hard work we have seen this week. Check out these amazing children:

Well done to the following children who have impressed their teachers with their work this week:

Well done to Fariah in Beech Class. This week she decided that she would like a 'Home Corner' in the classroom. She designed it and wrote a list of resources she needed. Well done for showing such creativity!

Well done to Evie in Apricot Class. Evie used her numicon to help her work out one more and one less, great work Evie!

Well done to Ayaan in Walnut Class for his fantastic effort in Maths. For making a number line and writing out your numbers from 0-20. Well done Ayaan.

Congratulations to the following children who have worked super hard with their writing:

Well done to Grace from Beech Class. This week we were thinking about how Beegu would be feeling after landing on a strange planet with noone to talk to. Grace came up with some great adjectives, including 'confused' and 'lonely'.

Congratulations to Olivia in Apricot Class for her brilliant writing this week. Olivia described how Beegu would be feeling after her crash landing. Well done Olivia!

Well done to Elena in Walnut Class, for your creativity in describing Beegu's home on the planet Mars. Keep up the great work Elena!

Many thanks,

The Year One Team

Maths, Literacy and History this week in Year 1!

Year 1 Maths, Literacy & History!

Literacy - Beegu has crash landed on Earth!

This week in Literacy, we have been getting to know Beegu, the main character in our new book of the same name. We have been imagining how Beegu must be feeling now that she is all alone in a new place and have been using our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops to write some sentences.

Maths - One more, one less!

In Maths this week, we have been using numicon and number lines to work out one more than a given number and one less. We have been focusing on numbers between 1 and 10 but some children have moved onto numbers up to 20! We have also been practising our number formation to make sure our numbers are the right size and shape. Here's a little one more, one less activity you can try with your child.

History - Chronology

In History, we have been practising our chronological skills by discussing our lives. From being born to attending school, we put each milestone on a timeline. We have also been learning some new historical vocabulary: past, present and future. Watch this video on chronological order.

Best wishes,

The Year One Team

Year One Science Walk

Year One Science Walk

The children in Year One selected four different trees around the School to observe and track the changes across the four seasons. This is a wonderful opportunity for outdoor learning and allows the children to experience the changes for themselves. We discussed the things the children know about Autumn and spent time looking at the trees and describing what the children could see.

At the end of the term the children in Year One will write their own reports to show the changes they observed during the Autumn term.

Year One Outdoor Learning

The children have been having a great time exploring their new resources in the outdoor area. Take a look below:

Last Monday, an alien crash landed in our playground. Since then the children have been searching for clues as to what might have happened. We think it  was an alien called Beegu!

It was fantastic to see the children using this in their roleplay this week. They used the loose parts to create a rocket, which they boarded to fly into space.

What might look like just simple fun is actually highly important work. When children use their imagination in play, they are developing crucial psychological and emotional capabilities that not only turn them into creative thinkers and problem solvers but has a huge impact on them as independent writers.

Later the same day, the children used the same piece of equipment but this time created a new game. Every time that managed to get the hoop on the pole, they got two points. This was a great way to reinforce the 2 times tables and addition skills.

Our balance boards were also delivered this week. The children showed no fear as they explored what skills and tricks they could do. The balance boards are a great way to develop balance and agility, two important elements of the Year One PE curriculum.

We look forward to sharing more of our outdoor learning soon!

Best Wishes

The Year One Team

The great cookie dunk!

 The great cookie dunk!

This week, the children in Year 2 have been working scientifically to answer the question 'do biscuits sink or float in milk?'. We made predictions before conducting the experiment, thinking carefully about each of the biscuits and whether they would float or sink. The children ensured we conducted a fair test, thinking about the variables such as the amount of milk and the amount of time we left the biscuit for. They recorded their findings and discussed their results. After all of their hard work, it was time for the best part - taste testing the biscuits!

'We need to drop the cookie and press the timer at the same time!' - Miraz
'We need to observe closely to see if it sinks or floats' - Faramade
''Look it's sinking!' - JJ

Year 2 Perfect Partitioning

This week in Maths the children have been working extremely hard to partition 3 and 2 digit numbers using the part whole model. Children now understand that whole numbers can be partitioned in various different ways. We started with using physical resources to support us and moved on to using numbers to record our work.

"I can partition 20 by doing 10 and 5 and 5 or 12 and 6 and 2." Pranav

Aliens have landed in Year One!

 Aliens have landed!

On Monday, the children noticed something glistening in the outdoor area, on top of the PE shed. We went out to investigate and saw... A SPACESHIP HAD LANDED!

The children noticed some peculiar shaped footprints leading across the playground. The foot prints were round with 3 toes... It was like nothing we've ever seen before!

The children think they have discovered:
  •  screws and bolts, parts of the engine which have fallen off and made the spaceship crash land
  •  an alien hat
  •  space rocks
  •  a space ship
  •  strange foot prints
We were all very excited about what had happened and it inspired us to make our own spaceship!

They also did some fantastic space art.

We are continuing to investigate what has happened and will keep you updated!

'The hat looked like rabbit ears, it might be a rabbit alien!' George

'They look a bit like foot prints but it might be their face.' Evie

'An Alien has landed, an alien! An alien!' Roman

'Maybe they were really small and slid down the slide and got bigger.' Lily-Mae

'Look, that cone wasn't there before. The alien left it' Connie

'I think the alien is hiding behind the door' James

'Tell Me a Dragon' Year 2

Early Monday morning Year 2 found mystery boxes hidden in their classrooms. Each box contained some strange items including what looked like a magical egg. The children closely examined the clues, made predictions about what the items could be and described each clue. After reporting our findings to the Zoo we were shocked to discover they had never seen an egg like this before, the closest match they could find was an ancient dragon egg. We were advised to be very careful and begin studying dragons to find out more about these mystical creatures. We read a beautiful story book called Tell me a Dragon to begin our discussions and thought about what might appear when the egg starts to hatch!

Year One Curriculum Letter

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year One - Curriculum Newsletter

Welcome back to a new school year. We are so excited to have the children back and embrace the ‘new normal’.  We have had a fantastic first week getting to know the children and are so proud of the way they have adapted to Year One.

We hope you find this curriculum letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher by email if you have any questions regarding Year One. (year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk)

Homework:

Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:

·         15 minutes reading to an adult and note in the reading record

·         15 minutes practicing spellings

·         rehearsing times tables facts (2x, 5x and 10x tables)

Spellings:

The children will receive spellings each Monday in a red exercise book. These words will usually be either ‘red words’ (words that cannot be sounded out) or ‘high frequency words’ (words that they will use in the writing frequently). Please practise these spellings with your child each night.

Please ensure that your child brings their red spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the book as this allows you to see their results. We will then send new spellings home in the book each Monday.

Trips and important dates

Unfortunately, because of Covid, we are unable to book our autumn term trips. We are instead looking to bring in workshops where possible and set up ‘experience days’ for the children.

Curriculum Information

We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this half term. If you would like to make any suggestions of what you or your child would like to learn in relation to the topics taught, please get in touch through our Year One email . We welcome any suggestions you may have.

Yours Sincerely,
