Bird Feeders in Year One

Outside activities in Year One

This week's outside activity is Cheerio Bird Feeders.  A great way for kids to connect with nature, and a super fine-motor activity too!

Fine motor skills are the coordination of small muscle movements which occur e.g., in the fingers, usually in coordination with the eyes. These fun activities have been created so the children in Year One can have fun, be creative and at the same time build on the skills they need to improve their handwriting, cutting and other fine motor activities.

Year One become Superheroes!

Year One become superheroes!

Year One's topic this half term is all about superheroes. We have been looking at our favourite superheroes as well as real life heroes in our community across our learning.

The children participated in a Superhero Workshop this week where they put their super powers to use to save the planet!

The children enjoyed the workshop, thinking about what they would need if they were Superheroes including what they would pack in their suitcase if they were going on a Superhero mission.

"I have new shoes!" - Faizah

"I'm taking a mask to cover my face." - Luke

"I put perfume in my bag" - Anna

The children have been getting to grips with their new classes and expectations. There are lots of changes each year- in year two the children now complete jobs, experience new and exciting topics and become increasingly independent with their ICT and activities.
Here you can see some of the children in action, enjoying their jobs, using purple mash on the ipads, building and creating in the year two areas. Great work!

Year One Reading

Year One Reading
We are very excited to launch our new reading plan for our Year 1 children.
This will be similar to the reading experience the children have had in Reception with the addition
of new phonic story books which will match your child’s reading level.
On your child’s reading day they will bring home a real story book, a Read, Write, Inc. book
that they have already read or will soon be reading in school, and one of new story books which they
will use their reading skills to decode (sound out) with you at home. These books will all go home in a
folder and the children should bring them back to school on their reading day to read to their teacher and have
their books changed.
It is very important that these books are kept together in the reading folder we will provide and are all returned to us.
How to help at home
The first time your child reads a story they may need to sound out lots of words.
You can help them if they are stuck by sounding out the word they are stuck on e.g. ‘c,r,a,b’ or ‘c,ar,t.’
The second and third time your child reads encourage them to say the words they know if they do not need to
sound them out to increase the speed of their reading.
To improve your child’s comprehension you can discuss and compare key moments in the story, answer
questions about the story and encourage them to read the story with a storyteller’s voice. The books have
questions and guides at the back to help you to do this.

Our aim is for the children to read with fluency and expression. To do this they need need to read stories
more than once. They will not be expected to read 3 books in one night but should read their books a few
times during the week to increase their fluency.

Look out for our video guide which will show a teacher modelling reading the phonic
books with the children. If you have any questions regarding your child’s reading please speak to your child’s
teacher and they will be able to advise you.
Yours Faithfully,

Year 1 Team

Year 2 learning Challenge

On Friday, the learning challenge and curriculum newsletter was sent home. The newsletter will tell you all about the term ahead including what your child will be learning at school, homework expectations and school trips/ visitors.

Please note, there will be a weekly spellings and times tables tests held on Fridays (2, 5, 10 and 3x tables). Spellings will be handed out every Monday- but books will need to be returned each Friday for the tests. The tests will be completed at the back of homework books, or on paper if the book hasn't been returned.

In addition to weekly homework (reading, spellings and times tables), we have a learning challenge which is related to our class topics (please see below).

We would also like to invite you to our stay and learn sessions: 4th October (reading) and 20th November (maths). It is an opportunity for you to visit your child's classroom and explore their learning with us or ask any questions you might have.

First few days in Year 2!

The children have been having lots of fun getting to know their new classes and their new teachers. In Cherry class they have been set lots of different challenges and the children have been eager to complete them and show off their skills! It has been an exhausting week for many as the children get back into their school routines and learn new things about their classes- we have fitted in a lot! Have a look at the photos below to see a snippet of the last few days. We look forward to having you back on Monday!

The children completing the spaghetti and marshmallow tower challenge!

Indoor fun- the children completed a series of team tasks to win prizes, one included building a tower of cups- the winner's tower was 80cm! The children loved supporting each other and showing off their 4R skills through negotiating, working together, reflecting and being creative! Well done!

During early morning time (before 9am) the children are given activities and tasks that allow them to explore the curriculum, build skills and investigate our topics. Here the children are exploring 'the great fire of London', completing word games and art activities.

Our first week in Year One

Our first week in Year One

What a fantastic few days it has been! The new Year One children have settled in well and it has been a joy to see them happy and confident in their new environment.

They have enjoyed making new friends and exploring their new surroundings.

Take a look below at some of the things they have been up to...

In our 'Small World' area, we have some fancy new blocks designed for building. A picture of The Taj Mahal was put on the board for inspiration and Aimen built a fabulous palace from the blocks.

Thomas and Freddie used the big blocks in the outside area to build Big Ben. They even made the clock faces for the top- very impressive!

"I love the writing area the best. I also like the cars in the Small World. They look like Lightening McQueen." Ahussam, Mulberry

"I like playing with the ducks in the water area." Oliver, Rowan

"I like going into all the area in the classes, especially the art." Harry, Rowan

"The doctors area is the most fun." Lenny, Pine
