Year 2 Week 1 Learning

 Year 2 Week 1 Learning

Welcome back to the Summer Term! We have had another fantastic week in Year 2, take a look below to see what we have been up to.

Literacy
In preparation for our new text this half term, we have been looking at a familiar story - Jack and the beanstalk. We read a passage, keeping our eyes out for the nouns and adjectives. We then wrote our own expanded noun phrases about the characters. finally we sequenced the story in chronological order. We are looking forward to finding out our new story early next week!

Parents and carers: Ask me about the clues we have been given about our new story and if I can remember the title.

Maths
In Maths, we have been looking at shapes. This week we have been re-capping our knowledge of 2D shapes and beginning to look at 3D shapes. We have been learning the names of2D shapes and have begun to think about their properties. We have also learnt about 'lines of symmetry'. Outside, we have began working on our 3D shape knowledge, going on shape hunts in our outdoor area!

Parents: Ask me what a vertical line of symmetry is.
Upcoming vocabulary: vertices, faces, edges, cube, cuboid, triangle based pyramid, square based pyramid, sphere, cone, cylinder.

History
We have started our new 'transport' topic in History where we will be looking at changes over time. We quickly discovered that lots of means of transport use wheels! We then worked in pairs to create our own wheels, showing fantastic reciprocity!

University of Broadford
This week has been a very exciting week as we started our Broadford University courses on Friday afternoon. We attended the first session of our chosen courses, working collaboratively with children all the way up to Year 6. We were all very positive upon our return to Year 2 about all of the things we will learn in our new courses from making cushions, learning different styles of dance, fun fitness and even baking!

Parents: Ask me all about the first week of my University of Broadford course!

Amazing Architects

Our structures have come along nicely in Amazing Architects this week. When we first opened the boxes we were astounded at the sheer amount of pieces and just how tiny they were! But, we did not let this put us off; we made a plan! First, we sorted all of the pieces so they were easy to find when required. Then, we slowly followed the instructions to begin building the Big Ben and Berlin city.

Although it took great care and patience, we have made good progress and we are on our way to completing some of the Architecture series.

We rotated on the Architecture series to avoid over crowding. During this rotation the children worked on their personal building skills, it is definitely developing week by week as the creative juice flows!

Jack and Levan made their own fair ground Ferris wheel whilst Gavin worked on his cage creation!

Comfy Cushion Club

Comfy Cushion Club

What a fantastic start to the University of Broadford! We began by looking at lots of example of cushions to give us ideas and help inspire us. We then began to draw some of our ideas and play around with different designs- and already this years Cushion Club have shown themselves to be a creative bunch!

Below is an overview of the course. Look out for photos and updates on the blog as we go through the weeks.!

Astonishing Acrylic Painting

What a fantastic start to the University of Broadford! The children in Astonishing Acrylic Painting were able to get straight into it by testing the different techniques and styles when using Acrylic paint. Next week we will look in more detail at the artist Joan Miro.

Amazing Architects!

We had a fabulous first session in our Amazing Architects course on Friday. The children, varying from Years 2-6, came bouncing into Cherry class with huge smiles, eager to get building!

We spoke about what an architect does and the skills this career choice would require. We then had a go at using different construction materials to build objects. Lastly, we challenged ourselves by seeing who could build the tallest tower in five minutes. It was great fun and we can't wait to get started on the Lego Architecture series.

See below our course overview which the children received on Friday. This gives an outline of what the Amazing Architects course is and what we will be doing over the coming weeks...

University of Broadford- Broadford Boutique

This week, the girls were set the challenge of creating a French plait. Plenty of resilience was needed for this! Have a look at the results, I think the girls did a great job!

University of Broadford- Broadford Boutique

This week at Broadford Boutique, the girls learnt the skill of creating a flip tail. After watching a demonstration, the girls quickly set to work. I'm sure you'll agree that the results were great. This style was certainly mastered and the added accessory of a decorative split pin and glitter hairspray certainly sent the girls off looking dazzling.

University of Broadford- Broadford Boutique

Each week in Broadford Boutique, the girls have been learning to create and manage simple trendy hairstyles which are perfect to do for a day at school. Last week, the girls learnt how to style hair into a doughnut with a twist - using a sock. After watching a video tutorial, the girls each made their own doughnuts using a sock (brand new sock provided!) Step by step instructions were then modelled on how to create a doughnut and then everyone got to have a go for themselves. I'm sure you'll agree that the girls did a fantastic job and best of all an inexpensive way to create trendy hairstyle. In the next session the girls will be learning how to style their hair into flip tails.
