Cedar Reading Cafe

We would like to extend a well deserved thank you to all the Cedar parents who came to one (or all!) of our Reading Cafe mornings.

It was fantastic to see all of the shared reading, expressions, discussions and questions coming out between parents and their children.

As mentioned during the mornings, the DfE has found that parent-child shared reading is the easiest and most effective way to boost a child's attainment, increase their chances of success later in life and provides some special bonding time.

We hope that you all had as much fun as we did and will continue the incredible work you're doing with your children with nightly reading at home.

Learning Challenges In Cedar!

Learning Challenges!

These children have been doing some fantastic work at home, completing their learning challenges and taking on extra projects!

Katlyn researched about Georgia O'Keeffe, and even drew a flower in the style of the artist!

Keep up the fantastic work everyone, we look forward to seeing more learning challenges come through!

Year 2 Star Writers

Well done to Akunna and Ollie for being our Star writers in Year 2 this week.

Ollie hasn't been with us long but he has already impressed his teacher with a great information text.

Akunna has worked very hard in her independent time to write her own 'fairy rainbow' story. She worked without any adult support and worked very hard to use her phonics to spell words.

Keep up the hard work you super-stars!

Year 2 Star Writers

Well done Charlie Tyrell and Riley Taylor! They have been busy writing diary entries in literacy all about things they have been doing. They successfully wrote in the past tense and worked hard to include conjunctions to extend sentences.

Year 2 Star Writers

Well done to Roberto Silva and Alfie Clark for being our star writers this week!

They have both written a great information text all about Castles in which they spoke about how to attack and defend them. They included subheadings, factual information and even a fabulous final fact!

Roberto wrote "The trebuchet is like a giant catapult that you would fire big boulders at the castle wall."

Outdoor Learning In Year 2

Year 2 have been loving the warmer climate this term! They have been up to all sorts in the outdoor area, extending their learning outside and working hard  developing learning behaviours. We have seen Art, Science, Maths and even Design & Technology taking place - all in the children's independent time.

Our Al fresco restaurant!
One day a selection of vegetables were put in the outdoor area... before we knew it. they had been chopped and prepared ready to be served in the 'restaurant' which the children created. They began creating a menu, taking orders and even made coloured liquids in the water area to act as the various drinks selection! What brilliant creativity and reciprocity they showed!
"We have a waiter and waitress, the chefs and the drink maker. I have ordered a carrot and onion pie!" Molly

"Can I have the cabbage soup please, that's healthy for you and makes you strong" Lucas

A spot of Georgia O'Keeffe (our artist this term) inspired painting.

Using the ramps to consolidate our measurement learning.
"The car travelled 2 and a half meters!" Exclaimed Alfie

Tilly has been busy at work building her window in the woodwork area! She explained "I have to use a long nail otherwise it won't reach both pieces of wood."

We attempted to recreate the Broadford tree using painted hand prints.

Year 2 Star Writers

Well done to Freddie Jordan and Nathan Russell who are our star writers in Year 2!
The boys have especially worked hard on their letter formation and spelling recently which has meant their writing has improved vastly!

Keep up the hard work boys!

Peter's marvellous castle facts!

Peter was showing the class the booklet he made after visiting Colchester castle. He was able to explain all the things we have been looking at in class for our topic 'Castles' and he said he saw lots of the castle features at Colchester, including, the dungeon, towers, moat and arrow slits. It sounds like Peter had a great time and he enjoyed showing these photos to the class. Thank you for sharing, Peter!

'I stood in the dungeon and I found a well. People have been putting money in the well. They used to get water from here.'

Fire Safety in Year 2!

Last week, Year 2 had a talk from the London Fire Brigade about fire safety. They learned how to keep safe in the home and school. The instructor informed us about what to do when you find a fire and gave some tips on how to stay safe in a difficult situation.

Did you know that a typical wood door can keep fire away for 20 minutes? Fire safety doors ensure a longer time. After calling 999, a fire rescue team will be with you in no longer than 6 minutes.
If you suspect fire on the other side of the door, you can check if the door is hot by using the back of your hand to avoid burning, rather than trying the door handle.

Each home should have a fire alarm in order to alert you to a fire, especially helpful for at night in case you are asleep. If you need assistance with this you can call the LFB to support you and they will check your house for fire safety.

For more information, including how to plan an escape route please see the website, or the fire safety card sent home:  LFB

'If you see a fire  you call 999' Freddie S
'The fire fighters need to get to you in 6 minutes' Maddison
'The fire fighters help with traffic accidents, rescuing trapped people and fires' Sophie

As requested due to prior feedback from parents, children now complete their tests in the back of their homework books. This enables you to see how they did and where they might have gone wrong to support them further. Don’t forget to check the back of their books to see their scores.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Castle Chronology!

In Year 2 the children have been looking at the chronology of castles. They were given pictures to look at and discuss together what features they could see. Then they had to decide where in history they thought the castles belonged, using the knowledge and facts they have been learning this term. The children have been very excited to learn about how to defend and attack a castle and they will be able to tell you all about the different parts of a castle and what they are used for.

"This is a Motte and Bailey because it is mostly made of wood" Maisie
"This is the Norman Keep. It is made of stone and it has towers and battlements but it doesn't have the extra walls" Jacob
"The concentric castle has extra walls and it is very big. You need a lot of money to make it." Tyler
