Mulberry class go shopping!

Mulberry class go shopping!

Mulberry class have been busy visiting the shops this week to buy ingredients for their cakes.  They took their shopping lists and each had £1 to spend on different ingredients to make their scrum-diddly-umptious cakes.  The children had a brilliant time working out how much they could spend and buying the items at the self checkout!

Pine's Star Writer

The star writer in Pine class this week, goes to Victoria for her amazing set of instructions. She remembered to include all of the features that we have been learning in Year 1 as well as making sure her writing had time openers and bossy verbs.

Well done Victoria, keep up the hard work!

Crazy Cake Party!

Crazy Cake Party!

The first group of bakers in Pine class set a high bench mark this week with their fantastic effort. The boys weighed and measured all of their ingredients in the morning. Once they had mad the mixture and poured it into cake tins they took it to cook and helped her to work out how long it would take to bake.

Once the cake had cooled, the boys spent the first part of the afternoon deciding how to decorate their two tiered cake. I'm not sure if more of the marshmallows ended up in their mouths or the cake!

At half past two, the boys made a grand entrance into the dining room, where their parents were waiting eagerly to taste the finished masterpiece!

I am truly impressed by the efforts that this group put in to their design, making and decorating. Well done boys!

Year One celebrate Healthy Eating Week!

Feeling Fruity!

Year One were very excited for Healthy Eating Week. Throughout the week they were able to try different fruits and vegetables and also partake in a range of fitness activities.

On day one, they children were given peppers to try. We first had a discussion about the colours and whether the children thought they would all taste the same. At first not everyone wanted to try it as they said they knew they didn't like it. However, after a bit of encouragement 100% of the children tried the peppers! Some children who said that they didn't like it actually changed their minds and were excited to go home and tell their parent that they now liked red peppers!

I loved the peppers. I didn't want to try them at first but I was brave and now I love them!' Courtney

The children were so inspired that they decided to grow their own tomatoes and cress. They researched on line what they needed to do to help the plants grow strong. They read that placing egg shells on the soil would prevent slugs from eating the plants. The children used their resourcefulness skills and collect shells from the trail. Only time will tell if this will do the job!

'I absolutely love growing vegetables. I actually grown them at home so I can help other people and show them what to do!' Ifi

Fun at the circus!

Fun at the circus!

As we approach the last few weeks of Year One, we have been asking the children for their highlights from this year. One that was very popular with all the children was our circus workshop!

Circus Steve came in with the most amazing equipment for the children to use. He began with a circus skill performance that wowed the children and them showed them a few tricks. The children were beyond excited to join in.

They learnt to juggle, spin plates, hoola-hoop and wobble board! There were also many dressing up clothes for the children to use so they looked the part and well as acted the part!

I love the part where you had to spin the plate. I didn't even drop it! I want to get one from Santa!' Riley

This was the best day ever! I loved the plate spinning. I could do it straight away! Charlie

'It was really hard but I used my resilience and now i can spin my plate!' Kayne

Jungle fever!

Jungle Fever!

The children were visited by Jungle Rachael, who took them on an adventure through the jungle. Their mission was to explore the jungle looking for the lost key. Jungle Rachael's golden cat had been taken a locked in a cage and the only way to rescue was to locate the key and set it free.

On the way through the jungle, the children met some strange characters who talk the children some strange things... like how to speak BANANA! The conversation went like this:

Monkey Man: Hi Elsie-Rose! Your hair is beautiful, what did you brush it with?

Elsie-Rose: Banana

Monkey Man: Oh, that's strange. What do you brush your teeth with?

Elsie Rosie: Banana

As you can imagine children found this hilarious!

Using their skills from gymnastics, they moved around the hall like different animals. They hopped like frogs, prowled like tigers and sprinted like panthers

'I loved jungle Rachel. She was so funny and she kept turning into different characters!'  Richie
'

'My favourite part was when the crocodile came into the room and wee had to be very still so he didn't see us! I nearly wobbled over as I was standing on one leg like a flamingo!'  David

Rowan ....It's Tea Party Time!

Let the fun begin!

The time has finally arrived... BAKING TIME! The children have spent weeks researching, planning, and buying the ingredients to make their cake. Today was the turn of Archie, Hannah, Amelia and Indianna.

Yesterday morning the children entered the classroom excited to start the making the cake. They washed their hands and got their ingredients out ready to start. They used reciprocity and worked collaboratively and follow the recipe. They measured the amounts in grams using the scales and carefully cracked the eggs.

Last week the children each wrote a letter to our cook, Michelle and asked if they could use their oven to bake the cake. The letters we so good that Michelle agreed and the children were able to bake their cake!

Then it was time to decorate. The children chose to use buttercream icing in blue and green. Then came the topping. The children had complete ownership over the design and it looked AMAZING!

The parents arrived at 2:30pm ready to join their child for a tea party. They couldn't believe their eye! I am sure some of them thought the cake was shop bought!

We even had a visit from our award winnking chef, Michelle who gave it her seal of approval!

A great time was had by all and the children were very pleased with their achievement.

Well done everyone.... Roll on next Wednesday when the fun continues with our next set of budding bakers!

'It was the best day ever! I loved making the cake and my brother loved the chocolates on it!' Hannah

'It was scrumptious.' Amelia

'I took home 5 pieces! My nanny loved it! Indianna

'I chose to make the sponge all different colours. It's the best cake I've ever seen!'

Year 2 Tower Of London!

On June 22, Year 2 made the long journey to the centre of London to see the Tower of London! The trip helped us learn about significant historical figures such as William the Conqueror, as well as about our local history.

In order to get there we had to take buses, the train and the tube! The children showed model behaviour, staying with their perfect partners and listening carefully to their adults.

The visit brought castles to life, as the pupils have been studying these in topic and where able to list and describe all of the different features they could see!

They learned all the necessary attributes that you needed to have to become a knight, and underwent their own fast-track knight's training. They marveled at the top-secret-no-pictures-allowed Crown Jewels, explored the battlements and the White Tower and learned about the myths and history of the castle. Have you heard the one about Bran and the Ravens?

We would like to send a massive thank you to the adults who helped on the trip and a huge well done to the children for their impressive behaviour and keen interest.

"The Tower of London is a concentric castle because it has two walls" - Kanishka

"William the Conqueror built it to protect himself after the Battle of Hastings!" - Malachi

"The Crown Jewels are so beautiful and shiny, but they look very heavy." - Brooke

"I wish I could live in this castle, and hide behind the battlements!" - Blake

Year 1 visit the shops!

This week the remaining groups visited the shops to buy their ingredients for the cakes they are making as part of our 'Scrum-diddly-ump-tious' topic this half term.

The children showed great collaboration in deliberating within their groups to decide on the ingredients they should buy. They each had £1 to spend and were careful not to go over budget, applying their money skills from their maths lessons.

Year One are very excited to start baking!

Year 2 Yoga For Health!

Yoga

During Healthy Eating week Year 2 also explored what exercise could help keep us healthy.
To help us learn about fitness (and to enjoy the weather!) we had a Vinyasa yoga session in the playground led by Mr Jackson.

The children learned about how flexibility and holding the poses aid in improved health and balance whilst also helping our mental clarity.

There was lots of fantastic effort and some amazing balance and flexibility, but we all needed a good drink of water afterwards!

Cedar Spelling Race

Cedar Spelling Race

The last homework race of the year is underway in Cedar class! You move up one level for remembering to bring in your book and two levels if you then get ten out of ten in the spelling test! Congratulations to our current leaders, but there are still more weeks to go! Who's going to be a spelling chimpion at the top of the tree?

Kanishka's sword

Kanishka has been doing some extra learning and thinking at home!

After we made royal crests on shields in class, she decided that paper was too flimsy, and wanted to use a stronger material, she experimented with cardboard, and even made her own sword!

Fantastic reflection and resilience!

"I found paper too thin, so I used cardboard. I also decided to use tinfoil on the sword to make it look like metal."

Tick tock, tick tock.... Maths lessons in Y2

In year 2, the children have been learning about time in Maths. The children have been making their own clocks to help them. Now the class can tell you about what an analogue clock looks like, what each part is for, the differences between analogue and digital times and they can tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes, using their 5x tables to help them! Some of the children have also been answering time word problems as part of their weekly jobs!

"The minute hand is the long hand" Nathan
"When the minute hand is on the 5, a quick way to work out the minutes is times by 5, so now I know it is 25 minutes past" Sophie
"The short hand tells us the hour" George
"I have been matching up the analogue times to the digital times" Jacob
"There are 60 seconds in one minute!" Alfie

Bringing history to life in Year 2!

Last week, Year 2 created their own coat of arms. We looked at the new coat of arms designed for Meghan Markle and discussed the symbolism used. The children noticed the animals, patterns and colours and we talked about their meaning. The crest has yellow stripes to signify the sunny country Meghan comes from, the lion signifies prince Harry (it was on his mothers coat of arms) and the crown on top shows that Meghan is now a royal. Purple and red are also royal colours.

Next the children used Ipads and researched ideas of things to put on their own coat of arms. We talked about using traditional ideas, such as, where they were born, where their family come from, using roman numerals for numbers and ensuring the colours they chose were meaningful.

Did you know the first coat of arms was used to distinguish one knight from another? As a result of this, knights began to paint symbols on their shields. They eventually began to put the symbol on their banner and the coat they wore over their armor. This is how it got the name "coat of arms".

"I looked up where my dad is from and used the colours from this flag- black, yellow and green" Malachi
"My surname has its own crest and it has seashells on so I've used that on mine" Finley
"I'm 7 so I wrote this in roman numerals" Nela
"I used blue because I am loyal and kind to my friends" Lilly Ann
"We researched lots of crests to give us ideas and I looked up Havering and used the helmet and colours to put on my one" Frankie

Year One- Scrum-diddly-umptious!

Image result for scrumdiddlyumptious

This term the children are very excited about their new topic 'Scrum-diddly-umptious'! This topic involves an exciting project that the children will undertake over the next 6 weeks. Each child is give £1 (provided by the school) and with this pound, they are going to design, create and bake a cake.

Image result for cake

This topic is run by the children. They research different cakes, choose the flavours and the filling. However, £1 is not enough to buy all the ingredients.... so the children need to group up. The bigger the group, the more money they will have to spend. Although their cake design will need to be agreed by everyone in the group!

This topic will be building on their reciprocity skills. It will take collaboration, emapthy and a lot of problem solving!

Below is a rough timetable, but as this is a project lead by the children, this could change.

Week 1- research cakes and design and individual cake.

Week 2-  Decide on their final groups and create their final design
Write a persuasive letter to Mrs Nicholls saying why they thing they should have the money

Week 3- write a shopping list, calculate the cost and the visit Lidl with the children to buy the ingredients

Week 4 and Week 5- Bake the cake and invite parents/carers in for the tea party.
You will get an invite soon to let you know which day your child will be having their tea party.

Bring on the baking!
