A Royal Birthday

Year One celebrated the Queen's birthday with a Royal tea party! All the children were treated to cakes and biscuits in celebration of this national event. The children also watched a video about the life and times of our Queen and discovered how she has changed over time. The children were fascinated to hear about her family, her role as our monarch and to see the impact she has on our country. They enjoyed watching her coronation and snippets of her past speeches.

"The Queen sounds really posh!" Maisy
"Happy Birthday Queen" Elliott
"I liked her dogs- Corgis" Jessica
"The Queen has a big family, we saw her grandchildren who are old and she even has great-grandchildren who are babies" Kiera

We're going to the Zoo!

On 16th June, Year 1 were fortunate enough to visit Colchester Zoo. The children thoroughly enjoyed the trip! As part of the trip, the children enjoyed lots of new experiences, such as, feeding giraffes, feeding elephants and stroking horses. The children also saw lots of animals they had never seen before: Meerkats, Red Pandas, Arctic Foxes and Giant Turtles!

The children got to enjoy seeing lots of animals out playing in the sunshine and learned about all the magnificent animals we have in our world. We also walked through an underwater tunnel (24m long!), went to a giant playground, fed lots of new and exciting animals, listened to the fact-finding talk at the monkey enclosure and walked around a farm. We also walked through the butterfly glade, saw the new bear enclosure and wandered through the 'tropics', which housed a large group of lorikeets.

"We saw a lion sleeping and saw little, baby foxes" Indie
"My favourite monkey was the one showing off!" Joe
"The giraffe snatched the leaves from my hand!" Michael
"First we saw the meerkats, they were very funny and one was playing pirates and pretending to be lookout" Jessica
"The red panda was hiding at the top of the logs" Zac
"Next we saw the monkeys and they were swinging from tree to tree" Alice
"I was sad to leave because I had lots of fun" Rashid
"It was the best school trip ever!" James

Rock Star Awards

Well done to these fabulous mathematicians who have managed to complete all 13 sheets of the Rockstar times tables in Year 2. They have demonstrated outstanding tenacity and resilience to ensure they continued making progress. At times, the children were stuck on a particular sheet for weeks but they did not let this phase them and understood that small steps of improvement eventually lead to great things.

I remember being stuck on sheet 4 for about a month before I moved on! Alex

I found all of the sheets past 6 challenging, 5 was my favourite because it was just multiplication. The fraction ones are hard! Tyler

Queen Elizabeth's Birthday Celebrations In Year 2

We had a brilliant turn out of red, white and blue on Friday to mark Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday. The children in year 2 had a superb time celebrating; we danced, waved flags and ate party food to honour our Queen. We even learnt the nation anthem and had a go at singing it for her majesty!

I love the national anthem. They sing it at football too! Conner Holloway

We are so lucky to have a Queen, some countries don't have one. Leah Joyce

Healthy Eating Week In Cherry

What a marvellous week in Cherry class! As part of healthy eating week the children have immersed themselves in all things fit and healthy!

Did you know? Over 60% of adults in the UK are overweight or obese which increases the risk of getting type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Physical activity can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke and help maintain a healthy weight. Nutrition.org

So what better reason for the children to focus their attention on the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise. As a result of their learning the children decided we would start each day with a lap of the field and a mini work-out in the gym. This proved very popular as the children and Miss Estall  found themselves energised and ready for the day ahead.

To top it off, the children ended the week by having a healthy breakfast in class. They used the Sugar Smart App to scan various cereals to check for sugar content.

I can't believe how much sugar is in there that's bad for your teeth! - Deborah Oluokun

The children proved they are true health warriors as they tucked into their healthy breakfasts. They opted for skimmed milk or 0% fat yoghurt and replaced sugar for honey. 25 children out of 31 had never tried honey on their cereal but the feedback was great with all the children saying they liked the honey and would eat it again. What a great outcome!

Hmm this is delicious! I want more! - Chairs Jones
I want to try the yoghurt and honey on my shreddies. -  Charlie Marshall

Morning gym sessions went down well with the children...

Yum! Time for a healthy breakfast!

Children differentiated between healthy foods and foods that should be eaten in moderation...

After a run we tucked into a variety of juicy, tasty fruits including melon, mango, pineapple and nectarines...

Warming up in class to then head out for our daily runs...

These children are our superb Star Writers in Key Stage 1 this week! We are very proud of their efforts to work on their next steps, ensuring they meet personal targets. The children have demonstrated great reflectiveness which is a vital learning behaviour required to make continual progress.

Year 2 Learning Challenge

Please see below a copy of the final Learning challenge of the year.

We love to celebrate the children's work so please encourage them to complete some of the elements and bring it into School.

Significant Person: Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

Poem: ‘Share not’ by Ilene Bauer.

When I go out to dinner,
I do not want to share.
I don’t care what is on your plate;
I don’t want to compare.

I scan the menu up and down
And then make my selection.
When it arrives, it’s meant for me
And not for your inspection.

“You want to taste my fish?” I’m asked.
Some people never learn;
For then the expectation is
To taste mine in return.

And so the answer’s always No!
Yet comments never cease.
“Your fries look really good!” They are,
So let me eat in peace!

Each morsel on my dish is mine
And I intend to finish.
Perhaps my attitude will make
Your thoughts of me diminish.

I’m sorry if that is the case –
Dessert I’ll split just fine;
But when the meal’s delivered –
You eat yours and I’ll eat mine!
