Cedar's Got Talent

To say goodbye in Cedar class we decided to hold a talent contest to showcase our amazing skills! There was a range of performances from the children, including: singing, comedy, hoopla-hooping and recorder paying.

I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching the children in Cedar class and the talent show was a wonderful event to end a wonderful year!

I wish all the children the best of luck for Year 3 - I will miss them greatly!

Year 2 at the Tower of London

On Friday the Year 2 children were lucky enough to visit the Tower of London. After studying Castles and William the Conqueror throughout the summer term, this was their chance to see a Castle in real life and imagine what life would have been like in 1066.

The children were amazed to see the defensive features of the castle:

"Look, in the castle walls you can see the arrow slits. People inside the castle would shoot arrows out of them without anyone seeing them." Joshua

"I'm pretending to fight using the battlements to hide behind. Look, shoot and duck, shoot and duck!" Dorrie

After exploring the grounds of the Tower of London, the children took part in a workshop led by Sir Thomas. Sir Thomas taught the children what it was like to be a servant, a knight and also helped the children to become a castle with their bodies.

"I was in the inner curtain wall so I had to stand strong." Ollie

"I must look out for enemies." Vinnie

By the end of the day the children were able to associate the historical past they had been learning about with the Tower of London and understand its significance to history today. They all had a fantastic day!

Kumon Rewards!

Look who's been working very hard on their Kumon studies and have earned themselves some Kumon treats!

As the children progress through their work they receive stickers which they compile onto a membership card. When they reach specified amounts they can claim rewards and these children have done just that!

I can't wait to claim our next batch of rewards so keep working hard everyone!

I'm so happy, it's my first time getting a reward - Laura

I got the two notepads because I love writing so much - Jessica

Happy Shoppers in Year 1

Happy Shoppers!

This week the children have been visiting local shops to buy the ingredients they need to make their cakes. We walked down to Hilldene shops, where the children then visited the food shops looking for a bargain! The children compared prices and used their maths skills to workout what they could afford.

'We went into Co-op, Sainsbury's and the Pound Land. I liked it.'

'We didn't haver enough money to buy all the things we wanted so we took a vote.'

I really liked buying our own ingredients. I can't wait to make our cake!'

Year One's Maths Party

Year One's Maths Party!

On Thursday, the children of Year 1 invited their parents and carers into class  for their Maths Party. It was great to see so many adults were able to make it and the children were thrilled to be able to show off all of their impressive maths skills.

Merging maths games into the children's play and learning environment can play to each child’s learning style as well as making the subject more engaging. Including fun activities in a fun maths mental workout can increase interaction between children and result in better learning in a fun and relaxed environment. This was clearly seen on the day, with the children taking their adults from the classroom, to the outside area, in the sandpit then the water tank!

Children and adults can find maths difficult because it is abstract. In Broadford, we are using the CPA approach (concrete, pictorial, abstract). The CPA approach helps children learn new ideas and build on their existing knowledge by introducing abstract concepts in a more familiar and tangible way.

Concrete
Concrete is the “doing” stage, using concrete objects to model problems. Instead of the traditional method of maths teaching, where a teacher demonstrates how to solve a problem, the CPA approach brings concepts to life by allowing children to experience and handle physical objects themselves. Every new abstract concept is learned first with a “concrete” or physical experience.
For example, if a problem is about adding up four baskets of fruit , the children might first handle actual fruit before progressing to handling counters or cubes which are used to represent the fruit.

Pictorial

Pictorial is the “seeing” stage, using representations of the objects to model problems. This stage encourages children to make a mental connection between the physical object and abstract levels of understanding by drawing or looking at pictures, circles, diagrams or models which represent the objects in the problem.
Building or drawing a model makes it easier for children to grasp concepts they traditionally find more difficult, such as fractions, as it helps them visualise the problem and make it more accessible.

Abstract

Abstract is the “symbolic” stage, where children are able to use abstract symbols to model problems (Hauser).
Only once a child has demonstrated that they have a solid understanding of the “concrete” and “pictorial” representations of the problem, can the teacher introduce the more “abstract” concept, such as mathematical symbols. Children are introduced to the concept at a symbolic level, using only numbers, notation, and mathematical symbols, for example +, –, x, / to indicate addition, multiplication, or division.
