Year 1 Dinosaur Topic

Next half term we are going to be covering some important science objectives such as naming and describing the external parts of animals, sorting living things into groups, describing observations using simple scientific vocabulary and describing conditions living things need to survive. We decided a fun way to do this would be through a dinosaur topic. Activities will be adapted based on the children's interests and knowledge but we have some exciting ideas involving dinosaur bones and eggs as starting points. We are also very excited about our trip to the Natural History Museum to visit some dinosaur skeletons.
If you have some time over the half term why not have a look at the museums website: www.nhm.ac.uk/kids-only/dinosaurs It has some interesting information and games.

Role Play Hairdressers

The children had shown an interest in 'hairdresser' role play so the role play corner in Pine has now transformed into a hairdressers shop. There have been lots of learning opportunities as the children have been busy writing down appointment times, checking which day of the week it is, looking after their customers and paying for their hair cuts.
Olivia told us all about how she had seen her mum work in hairdressing and reminded everyone that it was important to look after the customers well. The customers were soon provided with books to read whilst waiting and served frequent drinks during their visit. They have used the timers to ensure hair is left drying for the correct time and have used mirrors so the clients can check they are happy with their new styles. The role play corner has been popular with boys and girls but during the last week some of the boys pointed out that they really needed a barbers, we will look into developing this after half term!

Uganda Day

Mulberry class had a great time today learning about Uganda. We learned about how different life is for some children who live there, we made made flags and learned to say 'jambo' which means hello in Swahili!

Great Writing

Year 1 have been working really hard to learn how to write clear sentences and remember important punctuation. We have even started to learn about adjectives and how we can add description to our writing. This week the children did a great job in their Rainbow Writing explaining what was happening in their chosen picture. Well done!

SuperTed

One day Super Ted arrived in Pine class feeling very miserable after he had broken his arm and was no longer able to fly. We wrote him a story about him flying over different places to cheer him up. The children have done a fantastic job of looking after Ted. They have been learning to tell the time so they could feed Ted his breakfast, give him his bath and his medicine and send him to bed at the right time. Emily has done a particularly good job of taking care of Super Ted and even came to school with her own card for him. He has had such a lovely time we are not sure he will ever want to leave Broadford!

Finley's Fantastic Bear Project!

Finley Livingstone from Mulberry class impressed us all this week with a research project he completed at home all about black bears. Finley found out some very interesting facts about black bears, including that some black bears aren't black at all - they can be grey or brown!

Great Fire of London drama workshop

We have been very lucky to have had a visit from Freshwater Theatre, who helped us to learn more about the Great Fire of London.

We took part in recreating the fire in Pudding Lane, which has enhanced our understanding of the events, how the people tried to put out the fire and what happened after the fire.

Cookery fun

Cedar class have become fantastic bakers. Luckily our cook Mandy always remembers to turn off the oven, unlike Thomas Farriner the King's baker.

We have carefully measured out the ingredients needed to make sponge cakes and bread. This has helped us to remember the different units of measure we use for weight, and has also helped with the reading of a scale.

Our understanding of science has also been enhanced. We have learnt that once the different materials have been changed by the heat, they cannot be reversed back to how they were before. We did not mind because we enjoyed eating our cake and bread rolls.

We also used the experience of making our sponge cakes to write instructions during our Big Writing sessions. We tried hard to use technical words like cream, fold and beat.

Cupcake Party

Cedar class have been rewarded two weeks in a row for 100 per cent attendance. We have really enjoyed the cakes and are trying really hard to earn another party!

Parachute games

Cedar class enjoyed an afternoon of parachute games. We showed fantastic reciprocity skills to create a Merry-go-round, a Mexican wave and a big bowl of popcorn. We hope to try these again soon because we had such a good time.

Georgia's Butterflies

Georgia brought her butterflies to school to show the class. We were all amazed when Georgia told us that the butterflies had hatched out of cocoons and how she has been helping her sisters look after them.

Outside Maths Fun

Cedar class have been making good use of the outside areas of school, since the start of the new school year. We have had lots of fun counting and problem solving outside!

We are counting in ones with sticks. When we get to a multiple of 10 we need to pass the sticks to the left.

We are using natural materials such as leaves or acorns to find the number bonds of 8 and 10.

September WoW Badges

The Junior Road Safety Officers have had a busy lunchtime giving out the September WoW badges to children who have been walking to school once a week.

If you walk to school make sure that you record the days that walk in your diary and bring it into school. The JRSO's will then give you the badge that you deserve!
