Cedar's Superstars

Well done to the children in Cedar class who continue to bring in achievements from home. This week Ruben brought his two Karate bronze medals to show the children. He explained how he had to train very hard to earn these medals. Keep up the fantastic work Ruben!

Sophia has also been busy at home. She has already completed part of the new Learning Challenge. Sophia chose to write out the poem in her neatest handwriting and we decided as a class it looked simply beautiful!

If your child completes any work at home, do not hesitate to send it in with them -  the children of Cedar would love to celebrate their successes!

Pancake Day in Mulberry Class

Pancake Day in Mulberry Class!

The children were very excited to hear that they would be celebrating pancake day by making their own pancakes in class!

The children worked in groups of 6, making a batch of batter. The fun started at 8:30am, as soon as the children started to arrive in school. They were very excited to see the pancakes being tossed high in the air- with only one landing on the floor!!

The children then got to pick what they wanted to put on their pancake. They had the option of blueberries, golden syrup, lemon and sugar... some chose all three toppings!

Callie: 'I love my pancake! Blueberries are my favourite!'

Malachi: 'I wanted to eat them all!'

Peter: 'I liked it when Miss Chappel Flipped it. It nearly touched the ceiling!'

Nathan: 'I liked making my own pancakes.'

Pancake Day!!!

Today is Shrove Tuesday and the children in Year One have been excitedly learning about this delicious day! Pine class looked at the Christian term 'Lent' and were discovering why we have pancakes and where they come from. The children learned lots of pancake related facts.

Did you know there is a pancake tossing race in the UK, whereby people dress up in fancy dress and run a race whilst tossing a pancake to raise money for charities?

The children got to practise their pancake making skills and made up several batches of batter. Together, we made a class full of pancakes and the children chose from a selection of delicious toppings- sugar, lemon, blueberries or syrup!

We hope you enjoy an evening filled with pancakes- the children are now very skilled at making them!

"We need eggs, milk and flour to make the batter" Giada
"Pancakes are different in Scotland and they have a different name 'drop scones'!" Moyin
"I enjoyed helping serve the pancakes to all the children" Zara
"I loved the toppings!" Christopher

Maths- addition stories

Last week in Maths, Year One were looking at addition stories and word problems. The children chose their favourite class stories to seek out their own maths problems from the words and pictures. They then went on to use the bar model or multilink to help them find answers to their number sentences.

The children really enjoyed being able to 'spot' the maths and numbers in their storybooks and make up their own word problems. Below are some of our favourites!

"In this story there are 5 ladybirds and 7 insects, how many bugs are there altogether?" Harry

"Once upon a time, a group of children went to the funfair. 6 boys went on the merry-go-round and 3 girls went on the carousel. How many children were there altogether?" Arnez

"Once upon a time, there was a lovely green field where lots of flowers were growing. There were 3 blue flowers and 10 red flowers and 1 pink flower. How many flowers?" Katlyn

"In the bar model the answer goes at the top and then you match up the bars to help find missing numbers" Andrew

Pancake day in Year 2

The children in Year 2 were learning all about Lent this afternoon. They were told the story of Jesus in the desert, the reason for pancake day and the reason for Lent. The children were then able to taste the delights of a pancake with various toppings.

By the end of the session the children understood the significance of Pancake Day and its resemblance in relation to Christianity. They all decided what they were going to give up for Lent and could explain why Christians celebrate Lent.

I'm going to give up chocolate, because I eat it all the time. Kiera T

I think I should give up my computer games because I always play them. Bobby

Mulberry Class Library Trip

Mulberry Class visit the library!

Mulberry Class were very excited to visit Hilldene Library. We set off after lunch and walked to Hilldene, where the librarian Viv, was eagerly waiting for us.
She told the children about the library service in Havering and how they could become a member. It was great to hear that so many of the children were already members and visited the library regularly.

They each got to choose a book to take back to class. Viv ended the session with a lovely story time!

Reading is a very important part of the children's education at Broadford and we endeavour to promote a love of reading through their everyday learning. The children read every day in school and we ask that they read for 15 minutes each night at home.
Reading for a short amount of time each night is such an important way to support your child's learning. When you read to your child or your child reads to you, you’re building their vocabulary, language and literacy skills, while improving concentration and memory.

Year One's new time keepers!

Welcome to our new time keepers!

The children of Year One have had a very special delivery this week. 12 brand new wrist watches! Each week, 12 children across Pine and Mulberry will be selected to become 'time keepers'! Their job will be to tell an adult when it reaches o'clock and half past the hour.

By the end of Year One, the majority of children will be able to tell time to the hour and half past the hour. By wearing a watch, it gives their learning a 'real life' context.

If your child wishes to wear their own watch to school, please encourage them to do so.

Year 2 Sculpture Workshop

Check out our new Castle that we created today! What is it made of you may ask...

Well, the children would have never guessed that they would be building a castle out of newspaper.... Yes you're reading it right. Newspaper!

Who would have thought that a material, which is usually so flimsy, could be used for such a great purpose!

The children really impressed with their reciprocity skills. They worked in pairs to roll, glue and compress their newspapers to make strong, stable sticks. They then fixed them together using cable ties. Once this was done, they attached them to the large structure, gradually building it up to eventually create a Castle. They even created a door to go inside!

Pine Class visit the local library- READ ALL ABOUT IT!

Pine class visited their local library to find out how it works and to take out some exciting books they want to read during golden time in school. The children found out some exciting facts and asked thoughtful and reflective questions.
The class were excited to hear a story from their librarian and then look at the huge selection of books they have to offer. The class learned about the borrowing process and enjoyed using the machines to take out their own books back to school.

If anyone would like to sign up to this local library the children took home a joining form in their bags. We discovered that Hildene library is linked to 10 others in the area and that children can return their books to any of these no matter where they borrowed from. The borough is also linked to other London boroughs and so children can use their library card in any of these.

We are looking forward to reading our new books during golden time and storytime and are hoping to return in the summer term.

" I asked how many books were in the library and the librarian said that we had access to millions across the borough!!" Zara
"I asked how they got the books in the library. It is because they order them from a stockist and they get to choose any they want and put them in their library" Arnez
"There were too many to choose from, it was difficult! I cant wait to go back and choose another!" Tilly & Kaley.

Year One West Ham Visit

The children in Year One were very excited this morning as West Ham came in to take over! The children had their supporting kits on and were excited for the challenges which lay ahead. Their first task was to complete a series of activities involving ball skills, dribbling, co-ordination, accuracy and precision. The class were coached by experts at West Ham as well as our own in house superstars!

Next, the children completed a Literacy workshop about sentence structure and watched a short football clip of their favourite team in action!

"I won the game we were playing - it was really exciting" Klaidi

"We were looking at how to jump really high by the WH coach!" Jolene

"We learned dribbling skills" Moyin

"We had to unjumble the sentence. I knew the full stop part came at the end and the capital letter is always needed at the start" Harry

Year 2 West Ham Takeover

The children arrived at school in their claret and blue, eagerly awaiting the West Ham takeover day. Their first task was to complete a set of challenges which involved many different ball skills. The children worked on their agility, accuracy, strength and coordination. They then competed a Literacy based workshop, which focused on sentence structure. By the end of the workshop all the children had corrected the jumbled sentences written by Hammer Head the mascot.

All the children thoroughly enjoyed being part of West Ham for the day - even if they did almost get blown away!

I have to really focus so I can throw the bean bag into the hoop. I want to score 1000 points. Bobby.

I am so proud to be wearing my West Ham kit today. It has been so much fun. Maisy

Prepping for West Ham...

Year 2 are very excited for the West Ham day tomorrow. We have been painting our own flags and have created bunting compiled of mini West Ham players! We needed to be very patient to ensure the badge was clear and also used our reciprocity skills to work together on the large flag.

Come on you Irons!

Year 2 Learning Challenge

Below is the Learning Challenge for this half term. A hard copy will be given out by the end of the week. As always, we can't wait to see the fantastic work produced. The Learning Challenge supports  children in deepening their understanding of lessons taught at School and proves very beneficial.
Your continual support in encouraging the children to complete the elements is greatly appreciated.

Poem: The World’s fastest bicycle by Kenn Nesbitt

My bicycle's the fastest
that the world has ever seen;
it has supersonic engines
and a flame-retardant sheen.

My bicycle will travel
a gazillion miles an hour --
it has rockets on the handlebars
for supplemental power.

The pedals both are jet-propelled
to help you pedal faster,
and the shifter is equipped
with an electric turbo-blaster.

The fender has a parachute
in case you need to brake.
Yes, my bike is undeniably
the fastest one they make.

My bicycle's incredible!
I love the way it feels,
and I'll like it even more
when Dad removes the training wheels.
