Year 1 Autumn 2 Curriculum Newsletter 01.11.22

   1st November 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year One - Autumn 2 Curriculum Newsletter

Welcome back, we hope you have had a wonderful half term break! We are so excited to have the children back ready to start the new half term. This term Beech class will be taking part in Forest School on Tuesday. Walnut and Apricot Class will be taking part in PE. Please ensure that children have long-sleeved tops or jumpers and jogging bottoms or leggings for both Forest School and PE.

We hope you find this curriculum letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher by email if you have any questions regarding Year One. (year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk)

Homework:

Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:

·         15 minutes reading to an adult and note in the reading record

·         15 minutes practising spellings

·         rehearsing times tables facts (2x, 5x and 10x tables)

Spellings:

The children will receive spellings each Monday in a red exercise book. These words will usually be either ‘red words’ (words that cannot be sounded out) or ‘high frequency words’ (words that they will use in the writing frequently).

Please ensure that your child brings their red spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the book as this allows you to see their results. We will then send new spellings home in the book each Monday.

Year 2 Learning- Week 8

We have been very busy in Year 2 this week, here are some of the  highlights of our week!

Literacy

This week in literacy our grammar focus was letter formation and uplevelling sentences. We thought about ways we can change sentences to make them sound exciting. This week we have also learnt about book reviews. We wrote a book review about Egg Box Dragon. We rated the book, spoke about our favourite parts and drew our favourite scenes.

Maths

This week was our last week learning about Place Value. We showed all we have learnt this term. This included estimating on a number line, completing number tracks, writing numbers in numerals and completing number sentences. We have been amazing with our resilience while learning Place Value. All the teachers are so proud!

PSHE

This week we have learnt about kindness and respect. Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Respect is regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others. We looked at a range of scenarios and decided if the person was showing kindness, respect or neither. We then completed a worksheet on ways we can show kindness and respect and ways that are not showing kindness and respect. It is cool to be kind!

Black History Month

This week as part of Black History Month we have taken part in art and learned African themed dances. We learnt about Alma Thomas who was an African-American artist and teacher who lived and worked in Washington D.C and is now recognised as a major American painter of the 20th century. Thomas is best known for the "exuberant", colourful, abstract paintings. We used bright coloured paper to create circular designs. We created patterns and our art work looked fabulous!

Happy Diwali!

This week we celebrated Diwali as a whole school.  Diwali also known as the Festival of Lights is a Hindu religious festival and one of the most important festivals within Hinduism. The children came dressed in their brightest coloured clothes and participated in a range of activities including making Rangoli patterns, completing Mendi hands and learning the story of Rama and Sita - Listen here. Happy Diwali from Year 2!

Well done Year 2 on a fabulous first half term. Enjoy a well deserved break, we can't wait to see you back at school!

Year 1 in Action October 2022

Year 1 in Action October 1

We have been working super hard in the continuous provision this month. The children have enjoyed working together to design their own race courses using the track equipment. The children found the pieces they needed to extend their track and began taking turns racing each other.

Others have been challenging themselves in the math area and using hundred squares to practise writing numbers from 1-100. Afterwards the children counted in hundreds using the hundred square to support them, counting from 100 up to 2000.

As part of our Beegu unit of work the children have been creating alien friends in the self-led learning sessions and requesting different crafts needed to complete their alien friends.

Theo the Reading Dog

The children have had  the opportunity to have a special meet and greet with Theo the dog. Some of the children will have the chance to read stories to Theo, who really enjoys a good story and hug!

Independent writing

Imaginative play

Children have been making up their own games by creating make up and brushes to get each other ready for a special party.

Art

The children in year 1 have been enjoying sketching using kids' hub. They have been drawing familiar characters as well as spooky Halloween pumpkins!
