Year 1: What We Are Learning 

This week in PE, Walnut Class have been exploring dance and movement to music. While the other classes are working on different areas of PE, Walnut Class have been focusing on developing their rhythm, coordination and confidence through dance. 

We have been learning to count and move in beats of 8, keeping our movements in time with the music. We have also been using different movements inspired by the weather, including the sun, rain, ice and snow.

The children have really enjoyed being creative and using their bodies to express different types of weather while developing their movement skills. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow throughout the week, and we look forward to building upon these skills in PE next week!

If you want to continue  the learning at home, create your own weather dance routine! 

Put on a song: Choose a song with a clear, upbeat rhythm. 

Count the beat: Practice counting out loud together in groups of 8. 

Pick a forecast: Have your child invent an 8 beat movement for a specific type of weather e.g. rain, sun, thunderstorm

This week, our Year One children took part in an exciting whole-school interactive workshop with Drama Geezers, focusing on resilience, one of our four Rs!

The children thoroughly enjoyed sharing their creative ideas, working collaboratively, and performing alongside the ‘Geezers’ to create their very own chapter of a book. It was wonderful to see their confidence, creativity and resilience shine throughout the session!

The finished book will be professionally printed and shared in every classroom, allowing everyone in our school community to enjoy the children’s fantastic work.

Broadford DIY-

Every Friday, the children in Year 1 will be learning and practising a new practical skill that they can continue to develop both in the classroom and at home. These skills are designed to encourage independence, confidence and perseverance, while helping the children develop important everyday life skills. They have been learning how to wash their hands properly, practise doing up their zips and buttons and use scissors safely when cutting. It was lovely to see the children supporting and encouraging one another. They enjoyed helping their friends and celebrating each other’s successes. We are very proud of their teamwork, patience and growing independence!

Year 2 - Learning Blog

This week in PE, the children have been practising their skipping skills. They began by learning how to move the skipping rope in a circular motion, helping them understand the momentum needed to swing the rope over their heads. Once they had mastered this action, they moved on to jumping over the rope. As a challenge, the children were asked to see how many jumps they could complete before stopping.

The children then worked in pairs, with one child turning the rope while both attempted to jump together. This was a tricky task for some, but everyone tried incredibly hard. It was wonderful to see so many children achieve a few successful jumps without stopping — a fantastic accomplishment.

At Broadford, we celebrate marvellous mistakes, and we know that trying hard and practising will always help the children become successful — even in skipping!

On Wednesday 25th February, we are excited to welcome a company into school to run a skipping workshop for the children. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit on this day, with a particular emphasis on trainers, as they will be taking part in lots of active skipping activities. There is no need to bring anything extra into school, as the visiting company will provide all of the equipment and resources needed for the workshop. 

We’re sure the children will have a fun and energetic experience!

Year 1: What We Are Learning 

“Being unkind makes people sad and angry!” said Mia. 

This week in PSHE, the children explored the difference between bullying and being unkind. They discussed what each looks like, how it can make people feel, and why it is important to treat others with respect. Through thoughtful conversations, the children learned strategies for responding to unkind behaviour and how to support their friends. This lesson helped them understand the importance of kindness, empathy and speaking up when they see bullying. 

Year 1 have been recapping number bonds to 10 using numicon pictures to support them. Children recalled tens and ones within two digit numbers and showed understanding that number bonds to 20 involves two tens, one ten usually being incomplete. The children then used their knowledge of number bonds to 10 to complete their number bonds to 20.

This week in PE,  pupils enjoyed a yoga session focused on balance. We talked about how balance is an important life skill that helps us in everyday activities such as standing, sitting, climbing stairs and jumping safely. The children explored a series of fun balancing poses (inspired by circus yoga!), practising each pose while taking slow, calm breaths. They were encouraged to hold each balance for three breaths, with extra challenges like holding for longer or closing their eyes to really test their focus and control. The poses helped children develop strength, coordination, flexibility and body awareness.

This half term in PE, the children have been taking part in a range of exciting team-building activities designed to help them develop important collaborative skills. They have worked through a variety of challenges, some using equipment such as cones, hoops and ropes, and others that relied solely on their bodies and imagination.

Throughout these sessions, the children have demonstrated wonderful reciprocity as they supported one another, as well as resilience when tasks became tricky. They have been resourceful, thinking creatively to solve problems, and reflective, considering what went well and how they could improve as a team.

“72% of all children in Year 1 and 2 made expected (or above) progress in their Autumn 1 RWI assessment!” Miss Davis proudly shared. This success has also been down to the fantastic efforts of parents/ carers at home who contribute to their children’s learning; thank you!

This week Year 1, the children have been developing their understanding of systematic number bonds within 10. They have been learning and practising their number bonds to 10, exploring all the different pairs of numbers that work together to make 10.The children have worked brilliantly with practical resources and have shown growing confidence in explaining their thinking using the part–whole model.

The children have also been working hard in PSHE this week working on the following learning objectives:

• Recognise emotions and physical feelings associated with feeling unsafe; 

• Identify people who can help them when they feel unsafe

The children identified four people who they could talk to about their feelings if they felt unsafe and wrote them down on the four limbs of a person’s outline. They also discussed the bodily sensations that feeling anxious, worried or upset evokes ie sweaty hands, needing the toilet, stomach ache, feeling sick.

This week in PE, the children have continued their exciting dance topic, exploring the wonderful world of the circus! They practised moving like different circus characters including ringleaders, acrobats, tightrope walkers, strongmen and strongwomen, audience members and clowns. 

As they created their own sequences and worked in small groups, they showed great reciprocity, taking turns, sharing ideas and supporting each other’s performances. They also demonstrated reflectiveness, thinking carefully about how to improve their movements and how each role could be expressed through dance. 

It was fantastic to see their confidence, creativity, and teamwork in action!

Year 1: What We Are Learning 

This week our literacy focus book has been: Beegu, by Alexis Deacon

This week the children had to create a friend for Beegu using play dough. They also considered how Beegu has been feeling and learnt new vocabulary to help describe this. 

The children have also been working hard in Art this week. 

The children had a fantastic time experimenting with chalk and oil pastels to create their own imaginative “snail drawings” on black sugar paper.

In PE this week the children have been developing their coordination, balance and movement skills through fun and interactive activities. They have been learning how to follow instructions, work as a team and build confidence in their physical abilities.

Year 1 have been working really hard this week. 

 In Literacy this week the children have been writing persuasive letters to Mrs Nicholls asking her if they can have £1 each to go shopping for ingredients for the cakes that we will be making later on this half term. They worked hard to remember their sentence rules and checked their work through. They also designed and labelled their own cakes.

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. Please continue to read with your children and work on their Spellings with them. Please remember to sign your child's Reading Record Book. 

In Maths this week the children have been working hard to count from 50 to 100. They worked well with their partners, taking it in turns to roll the dice and moving their counters on the number grid. Well done Year 1!

In Geography this week the children had their hook lesson where they were introduced to their new Topic in Geography for this half term. The children are going to be learning all about the weather in the UK. They are also going to be learning about extreme weather. The children made their own weather report after exploring the outside area on what they could see, hear and feel. They also discussed the four seasons and talked about what season we are now in.

In Science the children are learning about plants. They went on a flower and plant hunt in the Outside Area. They ticked off all of the different flowers and plants they could find.

In RE the children learnt about why the Church is so special to Christians and why the Mosque is so special to Muslims. They wrote about a place that is special to them.

Year 1 have been working really hard this week. 

 In Literacy this week the children have written letters to Mrs Nicholls explaining how they will look after the school and keep it clean and tidy. They also wrote their very own book reviews.

In Maths this week the children have worked hard to find half of different quantities using a range of resources in Maths.

In History this week the children learnt all about the creator of the World Wide Web Sir Tim Berners-Lee. They ordered the key life events of Sir Tim Berners-Lee into chronological order on the timelines.

In Science the children learnt all about our five senses and went on a senses walk. We discussed what they could see, hear, smell and touch outside.

In PE the children continued to work on their ball skills.

In PSHE the children made their own learning lines. They discussed things that they found hard to do at first but that they now know how to do, such as riding a bike. They wrote about what they found hard to do at first, what they did to overcome it and how they feel about it now.

In Literacy the children watched the video Hope and wrote about what happened to the turtle in the film. They discussed ways that they could help to keep the oceans safe for all of the sea animals. They also made their very own flip page like in our book for this half term 10 Things I Can Do To Help My Planet. They chose one thing they could do to help the planet and wrote about it as well as making a brilliant flip page.

In Maths this week the children have been finding half and a quarter of a quantity. Well done Year 1 for your hard work in Maths!

In History this week the children had their Stay and Learn. They quizzed their parents and asked them questions about what they remember of life before and after the internet. We talked about how things have changed in the way we communicate with each other since since the internet was invented. The children then completed lots of activities such as writing an email on the chrome books, stamping their names, painting letters with feathers and writing and posting their very own letters in our Broadford post box.

In PE the children practised their ball skills.

Year one are looking to introduce different resources into the outdoor environment and wondered if any parents/ carers/ members of the wider community could donate any of the following items:

• Dressing up clothes (between ages 5-9)
• clipboards
• gazebo/ structured shade
• den building materials (ie tarpaulin)
• compost (for the planters)
• metal Balti dishes (for the mud kitchen)
• large paint brushes/ rollers
• buckets
• child sized outdoor brooms
• different sized funnels
• reading books (for an outside reading area)

If you have any other age appropriate items to donate that haven't been listed please speak to a year one member of staff as this may be something we could take or use in another year group.
