Marvelous Mud

Marvelous Mud

After creating the Mud Islands with some of the children, it inspired others to continue to build on the area and use it in a new way.

These wonderful children spent a long time planning and discussing how to create their restaurant. They resourced everything they needed from the Year One area. They had the ovens at the back, serving tables to the side, an entrance and a wall. They even thought about how to make it safe so the wall (palette) didn't fall. It was amazing to observe these conversations and problem solving skills taking place!

One of my favourite parts that shows just how much the children take in, was when they shut the restaurant due to covid but set up a drive through so they could still serve food. Below you can see someone in their 'car' being served over the counter.

This is such a lovely example of children using play to make sense of the world around them.

Mud Island Madness

Mud Island Madness!

During the summer holidays, Year One had a fence installed. It meant that we were left with a small area of bark and we wasn't really sure what to do with it. We asked the children and they came up with the idea of creating 'Mud Island'

We used resources which we already had in the school but in a new way.

The imaginative play which came from the children was wonderful!! We had jungles, swamps, poisonous snake world... it went on and on!

We are continuing to build on this area, following the children's ideas

The Importance of Pretend Play

Pretend play allows children to experiment with and learn about the power of language, how it affects us and those around us. It also helps them to understand that words give us the means to re-enact situations, to put our point across and to make ourselves heard and understood.

Play this math card game alone or as a team. Lay out 20 cards on the table (leave out face cards or change them to equal 0, while aces equal 1). Remove sets of cards that add up to 10, ultimately trying to remove all the cards from the table. It’s harder than you think!

If you have not already make sure you log on to Google Classroom this week. It is nice for the children to look at each others work and have some connection whilst at home. If you are having difficulties email year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk with 'Google Classroom' in the subject heading. If you are finding it difficult to manage around work you could just take a quick picture on your phone and upload at a later stage.

We loved reading your diary entries last week. This would be great to continue with remember to; use the past tense, use adjectives for details, use words to show the passing of time and don't forget those capital letters and full stops! We will share these on our literacy lessons on Thursday and Friday.
We have links to other Great Fire of London writing activities this week. Look at the timetable to see what you could do!

Please use the sound mat below to support your child with sounding out and spellings:
Here are your spellings for this week:

Word Math Clipart

Please continue to practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables daily and work on number bonds to 100 and 20.
You can use Timetable Rockstars. Timestable have always been an important part of home learning and children are expected to practice these regularly. This is an easy and fun way to do this! On Tuesday we will have a new battle between 9am and 3pm to see which class can collect the most points. Make sure you log in and join the battle!

This week we are learning about money, there are some videos on the timetable to support your child's learning at home. If you are finding this is a little tricky you could start with looking closely at the coins in your purse, sorting the coins and looking at ways you could use coins to pay for an item e.g. If a teddy is 6p which coins could you use? How many different ways can you make 6p? Can you record this as an addition number sentence?

Super Science | Whitestone Infant School

This week we are revising our work on Materials. Have a look at our timetable to see your activity!
