Year 2 Week 1 Learning

 Year 2 Week 1 Learning

Welcome back to the Summer Term! We have had another fantastic week in Year 2, take a look below to see what we have been up to.

Literacy
In preparation for our new text this half term, we have been looking at a familiar story - Jack and the beanstalk. We read a passage, keeping our eyes out for the nouns and adjectives. We then wrote our own expanded noun phrases about the characters. finally we sequenced the story in chronological order. We are looking forward to finding out our new story early next week!

Parents and carers: Ask me about the clues we have been given about our new story and if I can remember the title.

Maths
In Maths, we have been looking at shapes. This week we have been re-capping our knowledge of 2D shapes and beginning to look at 3D shapes. We have been learning the names of2D shapes and have begun to think about their properties. We have also learnt about 'lines of symmetry'. Outside, we have began working on our 3D shape knowledge, going on shape hunts in our outdoor area!

Parents: Ask me what a vertical line of symmetry is.
Upcoming vocabulary: vertices, faces, edges, cube, cuboid, triangle based pyramid, square based pyramid, sphere, cone, cylinder.

History
We have started our new 'transport' topic in History where we will be looking at changes over time. We quickly discovered that lots of means of transport use wheels! We then worked in pairs to create our own wheels, showing fantastic reciprocity!

University of Broadford
This week has been a very exciting week as we started our Broadford University courses on Friday afternoon. We attended the first session of our chosen courses, working collaboratively with children all the way up to Year 6. We were all very positive upon our return to Year 2 about all of the things we will learn in our new courses from making cushions, learning different styles of dance, fun fitness and even baking!

Parents: Ask me all about the first week of my University of Broadford course!

Year 1 Summer 1 Curriculum Letter

                         25th April 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year One - Curriculum Newsletter

Welcome back and we hope you have had a wonderful  Easter  break. We hope you find this letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions relating to the curriculum @ year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk or suggestions.

Homework:

Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:

  • 15 minutes reading to themselves or an adult and note in the reading record

  • 15 minutes practicing spellings

  • 15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)

  • If children would like to attempt an additional challenge, we have our weekly math challenge which can be found in the Year 1/2 blog page.

Spellings:

The children will receive spellings each Monday in a red exercise book. These words will usually be either ‘red words’ (words that cannot be sounded out) or ‘high frequency words’ (words that they will use in the writing frequently). Please practise these spellings with your child each night.

Please ensure that your child brings their red spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the book as this allows you to see their results. We will then send new spellings home in the book each Monday.

105 Reading Books Year 1

Please ensure you complete your child’s tracker and return to their class teacher. New copies of the tracker have been sent home. Please request a new tracker if needed. year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk

Trips/Visits

  • We will be visiting Barleylands for our ‘Field to Fork’ Experience on Thursday 7th July 2022. Further information to be sent closer to the date.

Curriculum Information

  • We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this term. If you would like to make any suggestions of what you or your child would like to learn in relation to the topics taught, please email us at year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk.
