On Thursday, 18th May, Walnut Class went on an amazing trip to St Andrew's Church in Hornchurch. They had an exciting time riding the bus to and fro.

When they got to Hornchurch Town Centre, they walked the short distance to the church where they were well received by the Vicar with her amiable and knowledgeable team.

The children learnt about the importance of a church and the different ceremonies like weddings. They learnt about the church’s long history, their stained glass windows and saw two models of the church. One of them was made entirely of match sticks and the other made of sugar. That model was as sweet as it was beautiful except that they couldn't eat it!

Worthy of mention was the bell- ringing activity. Each child took turns to ring one of the church’s ancient bells and they absolutely loved it.

Too soon, it was time to go home and we took the bus back.

Year 1 St Andrew's Trip

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are delighted to inform you about an upcoming trip for the children in Year One. Please fill out the required information on our online form. This can be accessed via the school blog or through Facebook.

We will visit St Andrew’s Church in Hornchurch to learn about the importance of a church to Christians. We will leave school at 9:30am on Friday and 12:15pm on Wednesday and Thursday. We will be travelling by bus. Please provide a packed lunch for your child on Wednesday and Thursday. If you would like the school to provide a lunch, this section of the form must be completed by 10th May, 2023.


Each class will be going on a different day (see below).


Beech - 12:15pm on Wednesday 17th May, 2023

Walnut- 12:15pm on Thursday 18th May, 2023

Apricot- 9:30am on Friday 19th May, 2023


They will be accompanied on the day by teachers and support staff, but we may need additional help from parents/carers. If you are interested and are likely to be available on the day, please select this option on the form below. If we require your help, the class teacher will contact you.


Should the weather be wet, please provide your child with a waterproof jacket.

OPAL - Our play project: New allotment area

 OPAL - Outdoor Play and Learning 

As part of our journey to develop Outdoor Play and Learn (OPAL) opportunities, Thames Chase and parent volunteers have been working with the children to create an allotment area in Year 1.


Did you know that planting is an essential part of any good play environment? The greening of hard surface areas has benefits to air quality and mental health and wellbeing. A growing body of evidence suggests that children who spend more time playing and learning in high-quality green spaces experience a closer connection with nature and develop ‘more environmentally sustainable attitudes’.


Over the coming months, the children will be enjoying growing their own fresh produce which they will enjoy during snack time.


As the children develop their love of the gardening, they will also develop skills to;


Take responsibility for caring for the plants day after day


To build on their self- coinfidence; nothing is more rewarding than the fruits of our own labour.


Experience awe and wonder


Improve their physical activity and build on their arm strength




Thank you to a number of parents who have donated vegetable plants for the children to grow. We are looking at ways to develop all of our planting areas, so welcome any contributions.

Coffee Morning: Wednesday 9th January

Do you have one or more children aged from 2 to 5 years? Would you be interested in taking part in a parenting course? The courses will be running in Harold Hill on Monday afternoons from January to March. The Being a Parent course is led by trained parent volunteers over 8 weeks and covers: attachment, feelings and emotions, parenting roles and expectations, communication, behaviour management and discipline strategies, and managing family stress.

Danielle Cummings, who works for Early Years Services, will be visiting Broadford to host a coffee morning to share more information with parents about the upcoming courses in 2019:

What is the EPEC Being a Parent Course?

The Empowering Parents Empowering Children (EPEC) Being a Parent course aims to improve child development and outcomes, parenting, family resilience and family relationships. The Being a Parent course creates a trusting group ethos, where parents are encouraged and supported to explore:

• Positive behaviour management and discipline strategies.

• Managing parent and family stress.

• Understanding and managing children’s feelings.

• Parent listening, communication, play and interaction skills.

• Attachment and parent-child relationships.

• Parenting roles, expectations and culture.

Why is it different?

The Being a Parent Course runs over 8 weeks and is completely free. In addition to the course, a free on site crèche is offered each session. It is run by accredited parent volunteers who have completed the EPEC training course. They receive ongoing support and supervision from the EPEC Hub. Their experiences, backgrounds, skills and qualities make each session inviting and engaging.

Who is the course for?

The Being a Parent Course is aimed at parents in Havering who have one or more children between the ages of 2 to 5 years. The course content relates well to becoming school ready and is recognised by pre-schools, nurseries, early years settings, children’s centres and schools in the London Borough of Havering.

Before the Being a Parent Course begins there is a coffee session where you can learn more about what is involved and meet the other parents that are interested in coming.

Cedar visit tescos

We had a fantastic time at tescos today. We learnt all about the food groups and hunted for different coloured fruit and vegetables. Then we looked at added and natural sugar in food. We were surprised to find out a can of Coke contains 7 sugar cubes and some cereals contain many more. Finally we tried some healthy snacks and made our own muesli.

If you want to download the sugar app which tells you how much sugar is in all foods by scanning the bar codes, the information is in the bags your child brought home. 

Cycle Awareness Day

Year 1 have been learning about cycling safety on their Cycle Awareness Day. The children learnt about how to best use their bikes and scooters, discussing the use of correctly fitted helmets, lights and high visibility clothing. The children all had a chance to practice their skills by riding around courses marked with cones. The children supported and encouraged each other and our most nervous riders learned that so long as they 'try, try, try- they can, can, can!' A brilliant morning had by all, the children were eager to get back on their bikes to continue everything they have learned.

Year 2 at the Firestation.

Year 2 had a fantastic time at the Firestation today. First we had a tour of the Firestation which included the gym and the kitchen. Next we got to try on a firefighters clothes.

"It's so heavy" muttered Bailey under the enormous fire helmet. 

Finally we got to spray the hose. Several children managed to touch the water on the top of the buildings.
