Year 1 make dens in the rain!

Den making

A wet week didn't stop the children from exploring and learning outside. If fact, it inspired them to get even more creative! They have spent the week making and improving their waterproof shelters.

Creating dens gives children the opportunity to think outside of the box and problem solve in order to create a structure. The children have been developing their communication and language skills as they worked as a team to create their den.

Our outside area is part of our everyday learning environment and we use it whatever the weather. Therefore, can we ask that on the wetter days, the children wear a waterproof coat if they have one?

Many Thanks

The Year One Team

Year 1 - Some of our learning this week!

This week we've been working hard and learning lots of interesting things!

Maths

In Maths, we've been learning how to use 10 frames to make number bonds to 10 and quickly add up numbers. We've been loving this Number Bonds song

Literacy

In Literacy we've been creating storyboards of our book, Beegu. We've been making sure to use our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops! We've also started to use conjunctions such as 'and' and 'because'.

Other Learning

As usual, we've been learning skills through play in our environment. Here's some examples of us building our team working skills, reading and working on our fine motor skills!

Many thanks,

The Year One Team

Flynn, for his super effort in writing a question for Beegu and independently practiced the red words during choosing time. Flynn demonstrated a positive attitude to learning, well done Flynn!

Pragya, for her wonderful work in maths. Pragya listened carefully during our group work and then was able to partition numbers independently using the 'part-whole model' method. Great job, Pragya!

Teddy, for creating a fantastic story at the writing table, Teddy used the sound mat to spell his words independently, keep up the great work!

Veer, for his great effort in writing about the timeline of Neil Armstrong’s journey into space in History. Well done Veer!

Well done Year One, keep up the amazing work!

What Year 1 have been learning this week!

Our Learning This Week!

Literacy

This week in Literacy we have been learning all about questions! We have been looking at how we can identify them by spotting the question mark and question words (who, what, where, when, how). Why don't you try this spot the question game with your child at home?

Maths

This week, in Maths, we have been looking at our number bonds to 10 and the part, part, whole model. The children have loved singing the number bonds song and using Numicon to work out the pairs of numbers that make 10.

History

In History this week we are learning about Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon! We have read the 'I am Neil Armstrong' book and written about his life. Take a deeper look here

Many thanks,

The Year One Team

Year One Science Walk

Year One Science

This week the children asked questions about the things they wanted to find out about the Autumn season. The children were curious to find out more and their questions included:

- How do leaves change colour?

- Why do leaves fall?

- How do leaves grow back?

Through our science walk we explored the answers to some of their questions while we looked at the leaves.

The children like to collect acorns and enjoyed watching the video exploring the lifecycle and inhabitants of an oak tree. Click here to watch the video and talk about the learning with the children.

Many thanks
