Dear Parents and Carers,
As the leaves begin to turn and autumn approaches, Year 2 classrooms will be exploring an exciting, hands-on art unit! This half term, we are diving into the world of natural art inspired by two incredible artists: Andy Goldsworthy and Alice Fox.
Our big guiding question for the children this term is:
How can we become open, curious explorers of the world, and use what we find to inspire us to make art?
To answer this, we need to bring the great outdoors directly into our learning space.
Next time you are out on a weekend walk, visiting the local park, or even spending time in the garden, please encourage your child to keep their eyes open for nature’s treasures. We would love for the children to collect and bring in any natural resources.
What we are hunting for:
Autumn fallen goods: Pine cones, conkers, acorns, and seed pods.
Leaves: A variety of shapes, sizes, and autumn colors (reds, yellows, browns, oranges).
Sticks & Twigs: Small, interesting twigs or bark pieces
Pebbles & Stones: Small smooth stones, pebbles or shells
Both Andy Goldsworthy and Alice Fox build their artistic practice around curiosity and a deep connection to nature:
Andy Goldsworthy uses natural, found objects to create temporary sculptures—arranging leaves by color, weaving twigs, or stacking stones.
Alice Fox works with nature to create prints, textiles, and mark-making, exploring textures, botanical dyes, and natural patterns.
By hunting for these materials themselves, our Year 2s won't just be collecting supplies, they will be practicing mindfulness, noticing tiny details in the world around them, and learning to view the everyday environment through the eyes of an artist.
Please send any collected treasures into school with your child starting next week when we return to school.

Dear Year 1 Parents and Carers,
We’re currently gathering materials that will support a range of creative and hands-on outdoor activities. If you have any of the following items lying around at home, in the shed, or at work — we’d love to take them off your hands:
ðŠĢ Guttering and crates – Perfect for water play, construction activities, and exploring gravity and motion.
ðĶ Watering Cans – Big or small, child-sized or not — we’ll put them to great use as we care for our plants.
ð Cable Reels – In various sizes; ideal for building, rolling, and imaginative play.
ð§️ Tarpaulin – Great for creating dens, shelters, and shady areas on sunny days.
ð Plastic Piping – Can be used for water play, construction, and creative building projects.
ðŠī Plant Pots – Any size or shape — we’re planting lots of goodies and can always use more!
Your contributions, big or small, will make a real difference in helping us create a space where the children can discover, imagine, and thrive.
Please drop any donations off either at the school off or in the area underneath the fire exit stairs next to the Year 1 classrooms (this will be checked daily)

The children have been enjoying learning in the Year 1 Outside Area especially with the amazing weather we have been having recently!
They have been continuing to enjoy playing with the wooden car in the Outside Area that has been taking them all to lots of different places! The children have also been writing lots of words onto the whiteboard in the Outside Area. The children have been enjoying planting and helping in our Year 1 garden. Lots of the plants have recently sprung up and we have planted more in the tyres too! We have also been enjoying making lots of delicious food in our Mud Kitchen and learning about capacity in our Water Area.
Year 1 in Action March 2023
In Apricot class the children have been enjoying building brilliant bridges in the Construction Area. They also made lots of different roads that all of their many vehicles could travel around on. In the Reading Area there was lots of super reading as the children took part in role play by dressing up as superheroes and reading their favourite books whilst dressed up as them! Apricot class has also been getting green fingered recently. They used rakes and other gardening tools to plant lots of different fruits, vegetables and plants outside in our Year 1 garden area. Apricot class also enjoyed making fruit smoothies. They used fruit, cups and cutting resources to cut the fruit and squeeze the juice to make delicious fruit smoothies. Well done Apricot class you have been working super hard!
In Apricot class the children have been enjoying their new ‘Shop’ role play area.
They have been building on their communication and language skills during role play.
As well as developing their personal social and emotional skills as they have been learning to take turns and role play lots of different characters.
In Beech class the children have been enjoying role playing ‘families’ in the Home Corner as well as ‘teachers’ with the Read, Write Inc cards.
They have been building in the Construction Area and reading independently in the Reading Garden.
The children have been enjoying designing lots of Arts and Crafts with lots of different resources and loved making their own Valentine’s cards this week.
In Walnut class the children have been working hard on their Computing skills.
They have been taking part in lots of activities on the I pads and programming the Bee-Bots.
The children have also been enjoying role playing ‘teachers’.
They have been building lots of designs in the Construction and enjoying Arts and Crafts activities.
Walnut class have loved making thank you letters and Valentine’s cards.
Year 1 have been working super hard, well done everyone, keep up the brilliant work!

Literacy
They have been enjoying reading stories to each other during their learning time. The children have been choosing their favourite books from the reading area and have been sounding out and blending the words and looking at the brilliant illustrations! The children have also been practising reading their green words during their choosing time. They have also been really excited about taking part in role play where they act out their Read, Write, Inc lessons!
Role Play
The children have loved role playing ‘Teachers’ over the last couple of weeks. They now have a full set of ‘Read, Write Inc’ cards and they have been enjoying taking it in turns to become the teacher and pupils. As well as role playing ‘Teachers’ being excellent for their imaginative play it is also brilliant for them as they have been enjoying lots of extra reading! They love going through all of their sounds and ‘Fred talking’ the green words. Well done Year 1!
In Apricot class the children have been developing their communication and language and imaginative play using the dolls house.
In Beech class the children have been using the home corner and role play to continue to build on their personal and social skills.
In Walnut class the children continued to develop their learning from their Computing lesson. They programmed their Bee-Bots and sent them in lots of different directions around the classroom!
It was another day of fun-filled and hands-on learning in Walnut Class as the children were engaged in lots of exciting, different activities.
The children have been working super hard and producing excellent work in our continuous provision. Well done Year 1!

We have been super busy this week in Beech class, completing our crafts and also learning through play in the classroom. The children loved exploring the snow inside in the warm and completing jigsaw puzzles too!
