Year 1: What We Are Learning 

This week in maths, we have been learning how to subtract using the part–whole model and the bar model.

Children explored how a “whole” can be split into parts and how taking one part away helps them find what’s left. Using simple diagrams, they practised drawing and solving subtraction problems, building a strong visual understanding of what subtraction really means.

Year 1 followed step by step instructions to create a sliding Gingerbread Man scene as part of our DT project. The children used glue, scissors and strips of paper to create the character sliders. They used a pencil and ruler to carefully create the hole for the character sliders to slip through. 

In Science this week the children have been exploring the processes of melting and freezing. They were set an exciting challenge: to save small toys trapped inside blocks of ice!

Year One- Scrum-diddly-umptious Cake Making, Group 4

Today was our final day of cake making and our last 3 groups could not have been more excited! They revisited their design before they started making their cakes. 

After lunch it was time to decorate them. The children were super excited to use all of the decorations they had bought from Lidl last week.

Finally, it was time for our tea party. The children really enjoyed the whole process but I think they enjoyed eating it the most!

Scrumdiddlyumptious Baking - Group 1

 

Today, the first groups in Apricot Class, Beech Class and Walnut Class baked their cakes! This morning the children measured out the ingredients and worked as a team to make the cake mixture. They mixed self-raising flour, caster sugar, eggs and butter and buttered some cake tins. The teachers then put the cakes in the oven.

 

After lunch, the children spent time measuring ingredients to make buttercream and icing. They then worked together to implement their design and decorate their cakes! 

Once the cakes were finished the children got to taste them! 

We hope the children enjoyed their experience and that their families enjoy the cake that they've brought home for you to try!

Year One's Wonderful Woodwork 

We've had another great week exploring the resources in our outdoor area. This week, we opened up our woodwork area and the children were super excited to get stuck in. With their safety goggles on, they set to work creating the most amazing pieces of art out of a range of resources. We had cars, handbags, sports bat and so many more fabulous things! This is Design and Technology at its finest!!

This week the children worked hard to bake and decorate their cakes.  The children used their brilliant Maths skills to measure, weigh and mix their ingredients together.  Thank you to all the adults who came to the Tea Parties and tasted the children's cakes.  Well done to all the children for their hard work this week!

This week, the remaining groups baked and decorated their cakes ready for the tea parties. The children had great fun measuring, weighing and mixing ingredients. They worked together to make sure they decided the best way to ice and decorate their cakes before presenting them to the adults.

Well done to all of the children that took part and a big thank you to all of the adults who supported us!

Going Back in Time in Year 1

In History, Year 1 have been busy designing a menu fit for a King! 

We began by learning all about the different foods that were available during the Tudor period and comparing them to the food available to us today. We then continued our Tudor learning in our DT lesson by preparing and baking bread using a traditional Tudor recipe and a modern day recipe. The children were able to taste the breads and compare them to decide which was their favourite.

Dream Catchers

Year 1 have had a brilliant time making dream catchers in the outdoor area this week. They used paper plates, beads, string and different colouring pens to create their amazing dream catchers.

Building Boats in Cedar!

This week in Design and Technology, the children of Cedar have been deeply engrossed in designing and making their own boats. The children had to work in pairs and found they had to adapt their plans as they went to overcome obstacles. Alex and Olivia said they added a sail to their boat "so the wind can blow it really fast".Whilst Naleli and Adi said "we put tubes under ours so it moves smoother". The final products were well constructed and they all put a lot of effort in. The children tested their boats yesterday afternoon, racing them in the large paddling pool to much cheering and encouragement.

The construction blocks for the year two outdoor area arrived today. The children got stuck in!

Cedar's bird feeder

Last week as part of our Design and Technology work we designed a bird feeder. This week  we used our designs to make our bird feeder, then we placed them outside and waited for the birds to enjoy their food. We placed them in various places outside where we thought the birds would see them best.
