Year 1: What We Are Learning

Year 1: What We Are Learning

During Art this term, we have been  exploring exciting ways to develop and enhance their watercolour paintings by combining them with a variety of other materials, including chalk, oil pastels and pencil crayons. They have been experimenting with different watercolour techniques, learning how colours can blend, layer and create beautiful effects. The children showed fantastic creativity and enthusiasm throughout the project, and they are incredibly proud of the amazing artwork they have produced. Their finished pieces are full of colour, texture and imagination!

Year 1 ALSO…

This week in RE we have been bringing all our learning together from the last five weeks. We shared a wonderful story about a curious boy who peeks through a keyhole to discover what is hidden inside both a church and a mosque. We talked about the special features, symbols and objects he might spy inside these buildings.

The children then drew their very own views of what they would see if they peeked into a church or a mosque. They did a fantastic job remembering the things we have explored over the last five weeks.

This week in Science, Year 1 pupils explored the trees in our school. The children went on a walk around the school field, where they observed and identified different types of trees. They practised using their observation skills carefully and learnt that trees can be recognised by features such as their leaves, bark and shape.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Year 2 - Learning Blog

This week in PE, the children have been practising their skipping skills. They began by learning how to move the skipping rope in a circular motion, helping them understand the momentum needed to swing the rope over their heads. Once they had mastered this action, they moved on to jumping over the rope. As a challenge, the children were asked to see how many jumps they could complete before stopping.

The children then worked in pairs, with one child turning the rope while both attempted to jump together. This was a tricky task for some, but everyone tried incredibly hard. It was wonderful to see so many children achieve a few successful jumps without stopping — a fantastic accomplishment.

At Broadford, we celebrate marvellous mistakes, and we know that trying hard and practising will always help the children become successful — even in skipping!

Year 1: What We Are Learning

Year 1: What We Are Learning

This week in Literacy, the children have been using everything they have learnt about descriptive writing, sentence structure, and poetry to begin planning and writing their own poems based on magical lands. Together, we discussed exciting ideas such as enchanted forests, sparkling ice kingdoms, dragon mountains, candy lands, underwater cities, and floating castles in the clouds. The children were full of imaginative ideas and enthusiasm!

The children used a story map to help the children organise their journey. The map showed the different magical lands they would travel through in sequence. We modelled how to draw and label the journey, adding key ideas, and magical details to each part of the map. The children then used their plans to begin writing sentences about each magical land. We modelled how to keep a repeated sentence structure to create consistency and flow. It has been wonderful to see the children’s creativity shine as they developed their own magical journeys and experimented with poetic language. We are very proud of the enthusiasm and imagination they have shown throughout the week!

This week in maths, we have been focusing on finding a half and a quarter of different quantities. We transformed paper plates into fraction mats by dividing and cutting them into four equal parts. Using cubes, the children practiced sharing totals equally between the sections. This helped them see that finding a quarter means splitting the whale into four equal groups.

We then transitioned into our workbooks, drawing circles to represent the paper plates. This allowed children to use the same sharing process to solve the problems independently.

Next time you are sharing something at home (like grapes, crackers or toys) ask your child if they can find a quarter of the quantity!

This week in Year 1, the children explored the history of letter writing and discussed how communication has changed over time. We learned about the journey of a letter and how the postal system works. The children enjoyed writing letters to Keir Starmer and posting them in the Broadford post box. They made predictions about how long their letters might take to arrive and discussed the difference between first-class and second-class delivery.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Year 2 - Learning Blog

This week, Year 2 have been exploring Structure using natural resources — and what an imaginative week it has been.

The children set off on a mini nature hunt around the school grounds, collecting sticks, twigs and leaves. Using their findings, they created their very own Stick Man inspired by the artist Chris Kenny, who is known for his incredible stick figure sculptures.

The creativity on display was fantastic. Each child designed a unique stick person, and some even went a step further by crafting an entire Stick Man family. Their attention to detail and willingness to experiment really shone through.

It’s wonderful to see just how imaginative and resourceful our Year 2 children are. Their enthusiasm made this project a joy from start to finish.

Here are just a few examples of our Stick men.

Mulberry Class Forest School - 11.5.26

Mulberry Class Forest School - 11.5.26

Mulberry class had lots of fun in their final session of forest school this morning. We were hoping for some sunny weather but we still enjoyed welcoming in the summer with some maypole dancing. The children had the opportunity to make their own mini maypoles as well.
We had our fire and the children remembered that we needed the balance of heat, fuel and oxygen to get our fire started. The children toasted marshmallows and squashed them into brioche. There was the opportunity to crush some ice to add to our drinks and the children enjoyed crushing this using mallets. We finished off with the next chapter of our story ‘Through the eyes of a tree’.

Year 1: What We Are Learning

Year 1: What We Are Learning

In year one this week, we have been learning about germs and why handwashing is our best defence against getting sick.

To see germs in action, we conducted a ‘Pepper and Soap’ experiment. We used black pepper to represent germs floating on water. The children were amazed to see that when they touched the water with their fingers, the “germs” stuck to them! However, once we added soap to our fingers, the pepper instantly moved away from our fingers to the edge of the bowl!

In KS1 each week, our pupils have been taking part in the University of Broadford Sports, which is designed to develop and strengthen new skills. Every Thursday from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm, classes will rotate through a variety of exciting physical activities. From the high-energy Interactive Squash and Athletics to the mindful movements of Yoga and Dance, there is something for everyone. Pupils develop skills such as mastering skipping and and participate in Fun Fitness challenges. Each session is underpinned by our 4Rs of Resilience, Reflectiveness, Resourcefulness, or Reciprocity, helping pupils grow both physically and mentally.

In science this week, Year 1 learned about deciduous trees. The children explored what makes a tree deciduous and talked about how these trees lose their leaves in autumn. They learned that as the weather becomes colder and there is less sunlight, trees stop making as much food. The leaves change colour, dry out and eventually fall off helping the tree to conserve energy through the winter months. The children enjoyed sharing their ideas, describing what they noticed about different trees and explaining how seasonal changes affect the natural world around them.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Year 2 Forest School 8.5.26

 Year 2 Forest School 8.5.26

Mulberry class enjoyed thinking about the water cycle this morning and doing some water activities. They learnt how to tie a half hitch knot and used this to make mini rafts. They found items in nature that float and sink and made nature pictures with spray bottles. The children also enjoyed watching a caterpillar explore the hedge.

Year 2 - Learning Blog

This week, the children have been completing a song called Friendship. They have loved learning the words and are often caught singing this very catchy tune in the classroom or the playground.

The children are learning to keep in time with the tempo and to count in to the rhythm of the songs.

As we begin to approach the Havering Music Festival, the children will be learning new songs, which I am sure they will be singing to you at home.

Here is a copy of the song if you would like to practise with your child.

Year 2 Havering Music Festival - Friday 5th June 2026

Year 2 Havering Music Festival - Friday 5th June 2026

Dear Parents/ Carers,

Havering Music Festival: Friday 5th June 2026

On Friday 5th June 2026, Year 2 pupils will be visiting Hilldene Primary School. The pupils will have the chance to participate in the Havering Music festival where they will perform songs alongside other local primary schools. On the day of the trip, children need to arrive in the morning at normal school time (8.30am) and we will be leaving promptly at 9.30am and returning to school before lunch.

Children should wear normal school uniform and comfortable shoes and will need to bring with them/ wear on the day the following:

  • A waterproof coat.

  • A hat and suncream (if we are fortunate enough to have hot weather).

If you are able to volunteer and join us on that day, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Many thanks for your continued support.
