Block Play
When the children are given the opportunity to play with blocks, they will develop mathematical and scientific skills like classifying and sorting, problem solving and number and measurement concepts. Block play will also develop gross and fine motor skills. Another fantastic development benefit is also the development of children’s oral language . This develops through their explanations of what they have built and through their role play with friends. Block play is creative, imaginative and great for social and emotional growth.
Find out more about block play here.
The children have created some amazing models using the wooden blocks and other materials and incorporated them into the play.
Did you know that when children have the opportunity to play with blocks they are developing their mathematical and scientific skills. These skills include
problem solving, number and measurement concepts and classifying and sorting too.
Water Play
The children have worked together to create a new exciting water area. In Year 1 we know that water play is a fantastic way to develop children’s cognitive development, mathematics, to learn about new science concepts and explore them and enhance our children’s physical skills. We are currently developing our water area working alongside the children and listening to the things that they would like to add to the area to enhance it.
This month, the children have been focusing on counting objects from a larger group in their math session. The children then began to explore counting in their self led learning time. The children have been counting objects in the home corner, and using the interactive whiteboard to create their own symbols to count. During a role playing activity children used number fans to show the amount of symbols displayed on the large playing cards.
Creative Play
Year 1 have been showing their creative side by becoming teachers, shop owners and creating some fantastic structures by using Lolly pop sticks, play dough and other resources that they have access to, in and around the classrooms.
ICT
The children now have access to their rockstars and mathletics accounts and it’s great to see them using their login cards to access their accounts during the self-led learning time.
The children should now have their logins for their Mathletics and Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) accounts in their reading records. Please email us at year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk if you have not received your child’s logins.
