Year 1 has had a great week with lots of learning and space activities. The children really enjoyed Space day and had lots of fun being dressed up as astronauts and aliens.

Literacy

This week the children have been working on sequencing the story of Beegu. They had discussions within the classroom about the start, middle and end of the story with visuals to help them.

Next week, Year 1 is going to be introduced to ‘past tense’. They are going to be turning into Beegu and writing a diary entry on how Beegu may have been feeling or what had happened to her.

Maths

In Maths this week the children have been focusing on inequality symbols (crocodiles) and using more mathematical language like ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ when looking at two quantities. Remember the crocodile eats the biggest number!

Next week, the maths focus is going to be  ordering ascending and descending numbers. We will also be learning about how to use a number line correctly and to fill in the missing number.

Try some  number lines at home.

IXL - Number lines - up to 10 (Year 1 maths practice)

IXL - Number lines - up to 30 (Year 1 maths practice)

Topic

This week we have been learning about the weather in the season of Autumn. We watched a daily weather forecast report and discussed the different types of weather in England, Northern Ireland , Scotland and Wales. Afterwards we looked at the different symbols which are used.

RE

Over the past few weeks, the children have been learning about how God created the world in the Bible. This week, they learnt to recognise ‘creation’ as the beginning of the ‘big story’ of the Bible. They then combined their artistic skills with their RE knowledge to make numbered creation days. Wow!

Forest School

Apricot Class had their last session of Forest school for this term. This week they sat around the campfire, toasting  marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate. The children also got to explore the textures around them by making bracelets from items  they found in the environment. Apricot class have really enjoyed Forest school this term and have been very lucky with the weather.

Space Day

On Wednesday the children had a fantastic time learning all about Space, Neil Armstrong and how he was the first man to walk on the moon. The children have had lots of space theme activities to do, as well as watching clips of rockets taking off and exploring what it’s like to be in space. Year 1 completed posters that were full of information about Neil Armstrong and got creative when become newsreaders. The whole day was out of this word!
