Year 1 Curriculum letter - 24th April 2025

                       Year 1 Curriculum letter

  24th April 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year One - Curriculum Newsletter

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful Easter break. We also hope you find this letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions about the curriculum at year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk.

Homework

At Broadford, our expectation is that every child completes the following each evening:

  • 15 minutes of reading to an adult, with a note made in the reading record

  • 15 minutes of spelling practice

  • 15 minutes of times tables practice (using TTRS)

Spellings

Children will receive their spellings every Monday in a brown exercise book. These words will typically be:

  • Red words – words that cannot be sounded out

  • High-frequency words – words they will use often in their writing

  • Words that include Set 1, Set 2, or Set 3 special friends

Please practise these spellings with your child each night.

Ensure that your child brings their spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the same book, allowing you to see their results. New spellings will be sent home in the book each Monday.

105 Reading Books – Year 1

Please make sure to complete your child’s reading tracker and return it to their class teacher. New copies of the tracker have been sent home, but if you need another copy, feel free to request one by emailing year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk.

Trips and Visits

  • Dental Workshop – We will be holding a dental health workshop for pupils and parents on Monday 19th May 2025.

  • Barleylands Visit – As part of our Field to Fork experience, we will be visiting Barleylands on Tuesday 15th July 2025. Further details will be shared closer to the date.

  • Bake a Cake Experience – As part of this project, we will also be visiting our local supermarket to purchase ingredients within a set budget. (Date to be confirmed.)

Reading – Phonics

Children will be assessed and grouped across the year group based on their phonics level, following the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme. Developing strong phonics knowledge is essential for becoming a fluent reader, and this will be a key focus throughout the half term.

In class, we will be revising Set 1, Set 2, and Set 3 sounds. Regular reading at home plays a vital role in your child’s progress and supports their ability to access the wider curriculum.

Please continue to practise reading daily with your child.
