Aboriginal Art in Year 2

Image result for aboriginal artRelated image

This term, Year 2 are exploring the world- locating the different continents and oceans and our place within these. Specifically, we have been looking at Australia and some of their traditions, such as, Aboriginal art. The children looked at various art pieces and identified what made them unique and different to lots of other art they had seen. Next, they had a go using paint and cotton buds to acquire the same technique.

Afterwards, we looked at lots of interesting facts about Aboriginal art:

  • Contemporary original art has been based on 'dreamtime'- the period of time which indiginous people believe the world was created.
  • Aboriginal art was created to help pass on information and stories to others as the people did not have a written language of their own.
  • Traditionally, the paintings were drawn on rocks and walls.
  • The dots were used to hide secret information, they obscured the secret symbols hidden underneath.
  • The most expensive Aboriginal art was sold in 2007 for $2.4 million!
I am sure you will agree, Year 2 is full of 'budding' artists!
