Dear Parents and Carers,
Year One - Curriculum Newsletter
Welcome back and we hope you have had a restful half term break. We hope you find this letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions relating to the curriculum @ year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk
Homework:
Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:
15 minutes reading to themselves or an adult and note in the reading record
15 minutes practicing spellings
15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)
If children would like to attempt an additional challenge, we have our weekly math challenge which can be found in the Year 1/2 blog page.
Spellings:
The children will receive spellings each Monday in a red exercise book. These words will usually be either ‘red words’ (words that cannot be sounded out) or ‘high frequency words’ (words that they will use in the writing frequently). Please practise these spellings with your child each night.
Please ensure that your child brings their red spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the book as this allows you to see their results. We will then send new spellings home in the book each Monday.
105 Reading Books Year 1
Please ensure you complete your child’s tracker and return to their class teacher. New copies of the tracker have been sent home. Please request a new tracker if needed. year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk

It is really important children have a good phonic knowledge and learn to be fluent readers this half term. We will revise Set 1 , Set 2 and Set 3 sounds in class. Please practice reading regularly with your child, this will help them to access the whole curriculum. We will update our weekly learning blog with links to our phonic scheme for you to practice at home with your child. https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources This is a good website with a variety of games to practice phonics skills.
