Week 4 Year 1 Learning

Year One's Learning

Literacy

In literacy this week, we have been creating information booklets about how to take care of our world. We've used our book and everything we've learned over the last few weeks to select our favourite ways to help the world. These include turning the light off when we leave a room, turning off the tap when we brush our teeth, planting seeds to grow our own plants and vegetables and recycling our rubbish.

Next week in Literacy we will be moving onto storytelling. We will be looking at what makes a good story and the children will be creating their own stories. We will act these out as a class and also create story maps by drawing pictures and writing sentences to go with the pictures.

Key Vocabulary: story, once upon a time, next, after, then, before, small, large, big, strong, beautiful, quiet, dark, bright,

Maths
In maths this week, we have continued to focus on multiplication and linking it to repeated addition. It has been wonderful to watch the children grow with confidence and show more independence not only with finding the answer but also with showing their working out.

We have also been looking at o’clock and half past and even made our own watches.

Next week in maths, we will be looking at halving. The children will explore finding a half for the first time using shapes and sets of objects. They will use the vocabulary ‘half’ and ‘whole’.

It is important that they know that a half means ‘one of two equal parts’ and are able to count them.

Key Vocabulary: half, objects, halves, quantity, shape, equal parts

Here is a link to an online game if you'd link to test out your halving skills:

Science

We had a wonderful science lesson this week by going on a scavenger hunt. In small groups the children were set the task of finding a stage of items based on the material or the property of their material. The children we so excited to such around the classroom and outdoor area looking for the items. We had so fabulous discussions around the items they found and what would happen if they were made from a different material.

Next week in Science, we are going to be learning about different body parts and their function. We will be focusing on naming the body parts and thinking about how it helps us daily.

Key Vocabulary: ears, legs, feet, toes, ankle, hands, fingers, thumbs, eyes, mouth, teeth, tongue, lips, nose, nostrils, see, sight, taste, smell, scent, hear, touch.

History

We had a very interesting History lesson this week and learned all about changes to Romford Market, between now and the Tudor Times. We discussed things that have changed and found some things that have stayed the same (St Edwards church!)

The children are really enjoying this topic and looking at past photos of an area that is familiar to them. Here are some of the pictures we have been comparing.

Next week we will be looking at transport now and Tudor transport.

Key Vocabulary: past, present, modern, change, same, Tudor, transport, difference
