As a reminder PE days have changed since the last term, please note each classes PE day below:
Mulberry - Monday
Rowan - Tuesday
Pine - Thursday
The children have settled back so well and it is lovely to see their smiley faces. As parents have been our co-teachers for quite a while we thought we would share with you some of our plans, to support you to talk to the children about their learning.
Reading
We will continue to have daily phonic sessions and ensure the children know their sounds really well and are able to read them in words. We will be building fluency by encouraging children to sound out the words in their head the second time they read a story, ensuring we are reading for meaning by talking about new vocabulary and pausing if a sentence doesn't make sense. We are starting some chapter books this half term like the Worst Witch and some Roald Dahl classics, these might be nice to read as bed time stories too!
Literacy
We are focusing on a text called 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. The story explores the theme of friendship and feeling lonely, important conversations after lots of time away from friends! We are building up to writing our own short stories but this week are focusing on describing the characters and using great vocabulary in our sentences.
Maths
We are consolidating our number skills! We are looking at working our which numbers are missing, playing games to support quick recall of number bonds to 10/20 and 100 and comparing numbers using the more than, less than or equal to sign. A great way to help at home is to continue to support quick recall of number bonds e.g. you say 5 and they should be able to say 15 if you are playing number bonds to 20. Keep logging on to Rockstar timestables at home!
Science
We are continuing to look at habitats next week. We will be sorting animals and using some animal research to find out why animals are suited to that habitat. Vocabulary - habitat, microhabitat, adapt, survive, depend, shelter.
Geography
We are looking at our local area and starting with our school grounds. The children will be sorting the human or physical features and will use their map skills to create a basic map of the Year 2 outside area. Vocabulary - position, key, direction, human (man - made), physical (natural).
PSHE
We are using our new SHAPE curriculum and are focusing on 'The cake of life' this week. To make a really great tasting cake you need to make sure you put the best ingredients in. For life, you need
to think about the actions you’re putting in every day to make sure your life is the best it can be. We will be thinking about how we can do this in school and at home.
DT
We are creating dioramas of habitats in teams. They will need to attach the materials, create their figures and listen to each others ideas!
Many Thanks,
Year 2 Team
