Year 1: What We Are Learning; DIY Broadford

Year 1: What We Are Learning

This term year one have been engaging in a series of lessons as part of ‘DIY Broadford’ in which the aim is for children to learn a number of skills that can be revisited at home.

Below you will see some photos of the lessons in action. The skills that have been covered include:

Sandwich Making

Before beginning, the class discussed what makes a good set of instructions and how to listen carefully to each step. The children then followed instructions to make a jam sandwich using one slice of bread. They spread the butter and jam carefully and then folded the bread to complete their sandwich. Throughout the activity, the children demonstrated focus, independence, and great enthusiasm.

Wiping up spills

In addition to learning how to follow instructions, the children also had the opportunity to practise important everyday skills. When small spills occurred, they learned how to clean them up safely and responsibly, showing care for their environment and developing a sense of independence.

Holding a pen or pencil correctly and posture

Teachers also supported the children in maintaining a good handwriting posture, reminding them to sit correctly and hold their pencils comfortably  skills that link closely to their fine motor development and control.

Here are the skills that the children engaged with earlier this term:

  • ‘Safety scissors’ and cutting

  • Washing hands thoroughly (Glitter Bugs)

  • Doing Up Buttons and Zips

These activities helped the children strengthen several key areas of learning, including listening and comprehension, sequencing and ordering, language development, and fine motor skills. Most importantly, they showed growing confidence in managing tasks independently and working carefully from start to finish.

It was lovely to see the pride the children took in their work and how well they supported one another. We are so pleased with their progress and look forward to continuing to build on these valuable practical skills in the coming weeks.

Beech class also enjoyed Broadford Family Dining this Friday lunch time which was spent eating at benches decorated with tablecloths and flowers with juice as a treat. Mrs Ellender and Mrs Stanley joined the children for the wonderful lunchtime experience.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing half term - keep up all your brilliant work and continue to practice your DIY Broadford skills at home!

Reception - What we are learning W.C 20.10.25

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

Our focus book was Room on the Broom:

Here is what we have been up to:

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. They revisited the first 16 sounds from Set 1 to reinforce their phonics knowledge. Please continue to read with your children and work on these sounds with them.

In Topic, we have been reading the story Room on the Broom. Reception worked hard to sort rhyming words into the correct rhyming spider’s web. The children were able to guess what costume their teachers were describing from the clues. They danced to Ghostbusters and moved like the different animals. The children also made fairy wands using sticks and leaves. Well done Reception!

In Maths this week the children have been learning how to find 1, 2, 3. They also worked hard to subitise 1, 2 and 3 and to represent the numbers 1, 2 and 3. Well done Reception for your hard work in Maths this week.

'Marvellous Me' Day

The children came to school wearing clothes of their choice. They wore their favourite outfits, clothes in their favourite colours or clothes that represented something about them.

They could also bring their favourite toy to school. They talked about their favourite toys during circle time when they shared their favourite toys with their class.

Well done Reception for an amazing week - Have a lovely half term, we look forward to seeing on on the 3rd of November!

Year 1 - Bring a toy to school day 04.11.25

 Attention - Year 1 Parents

Dear parents and carers,

On Tuesday 4th November, please send your child to school with their favourite toy. We will be using these to introduce our new literacy topic.

Please be assured that toys will be collected in the morning, used in the lesson (by the individual child) and collected back in until home time to avoid loss or damage.

Please have a discussion with your child about the toy prior to this to help them engage in the lesson. Here are some suggested prompts;

- Why is this your favourite toy?

- What do you like bets about it?

- Does your toy have a name?

- Where did you get the toy from? Or who bought it for you?

Many thanks
