Year 2 What We Are Learning

History

This week in history we had an introduction to the

Great fire of London. We learnt about

1666 and compared it to now. We thought about all

the differences in the way the people used to live and

how we live now. We noticed that the houses were

timber – covered in a flammable substance called pitch

and the roof was thatched, the streets were dirty,

they cooked using coals and used a horse and cart to get

around.  Now we have tall buildings, our houses

are made of different materials and we travel

by trains and buses.

Literacy

The children worked very hard to write descriptive

sentences about the Great Fire of London. They used

their senses and amazing  adjectives to paint a

vivid picture on the reader’s mind.

Maths

This week, Year 2 has  worked super hard on completing

activities around place value. They have used prior

knowledge of number bonds,  their skills of counting to

100 as well as using concrete objects to solve problems.

They have used a place value chart to identify and

correctly place one digit and two digit numbers on the

right columns.

Apricot Class - 13.09.2024

Today was Apricots first session of forest school. A big THANKYOU to all those who sent their children in a set of wellies and change of clothes.

We had lovely morning but we do go to forest school whatever the weather so please ensure you send your child in school uniform with a change of trousers/extra jumper to wear at forest school. EACH CHILD needs a set of WATERPROOFS (jacket and trousers), wellies and a change of clothes. Please label these with your child’s name as they will stay in school for their sessions. Thankyou. We are looking forward to our next session on Friday 20th September.

Year 1 Parents - Spelling information

Spelling Information

Every Monday, children will receive their red Spelling books, which contain three to six spellings based on their RWI groups. It’s crucial for children to practice their spellings daily and return their Spelling books by Friday, ready for their test.

Our Spelling Instruction Method

  1. Identify Special Friends: Determine if the word has any "special friends" (e.g., the word "sing").

  2. Pinch the Sounds: Pinch each sound of the word onto your fingers (e.g., s - i - ng).

  3. Write the Word: Write the word after pinching the sounds.

For Red Words (tricky words that can't be sounded out because they don't follow standard phonetic rules), follow these steps:

  1. Examine the Word: Look at the word carefully.

  2. Say the Word Aloud: Pronounce the word out loud.

  3. Cover the Word: Cover the word so it’s no longer visible.

  4. Write the Word: Write the word from memory.

  5. Check the Spelling: Verify if the word is spelled correctly.
