Year 1- What we have been learning

The children have settled brilliantly into year 1. They have been working hard this week on all the new topics and lessons that are being introduced to them. A great start to the year.

Literacy

This week Year 1 has been introduced to our new story Beegu. The children have been talking and writing about how Beegu may be feeling as she has just crashed onto an unusual planet. The children have been writing short sentences, practicing their letter formation and finger spaces.

William, ‘Beegu is sad because her spaceship is broken.’

Maths

This week in Maths the children have been introduced to Ten frames and how to represent numbers using them. They have also been practicing there careful counting, counting different objects and using different methods to write and record the number.

Computing

This term we will be focusing on technology around us and keeping safe using the internet. It is important that our children use technology safely and respectfully both at school and beyond. Identifying where to go for help and support if they have any concerns about content when they are online.

We will be introducing the children to different web pages and search engines and getting them to access their own Mathletics and rockstar accounts. (Rockstar and Mathletic logins will be added to each child’s reading record.) As part of this term’s work it is important for children to understand technology and how it can help us in everyday life.

Please find below some of the websites we will be using this term.

Sticks, sticks and more sticks. Today we looked closely at sticks and found identifying features on our own sticks. We muddled them up and saw if we could stop find our own stick, was it thick, thin, long, short, bumpy or smooth? We used sticks as unicorn horns, shovels, hairbrushes, spoons and many more things. Sticks were made into mermaids, microphones and shields. We had great fun experimenting with the many ways a stick can be used when you use your imagination. Great job Apricot class.

RE

This week we have been learning about how Christians believe the world was created in 7 days. The children have had discussions about how people have  different cultures and beliefs.
