The children have been settling into Year 2 well and have enjoyed exploring their new classrooms and outside areas! We have showed great resilience, reciprocity, reflectiveness and resourcefulness in our work and new areas.
Literacy
In Literacy, the children have been looking at our text for this half term - 'The Egg Box Dragon'. Egg Box Dragon is about a green Dragon that is a master at finding things. He's retrieved missing footballs, glasses and watches aplenty. He's so expert at cracking mysteries that the Queen herself requests his services. We have been learning all about adjectives to make our writing more descriptive. The children listened to the description of The Egg Box Dragon and drew what they heard. They have also been matching descriptive language to the characters and have been writing their own sentences including adjectives.
Robyn- "Egg Box Dragon looks like a Crocodile"
Aadya- "Egg Box Dragon has black wings and shiny scales"
Maths
In maths, the children have been recapping their knowledge of place value. We have looked at a range of numbers and how we can make them. We have been working with the dienes to represent two digit numbers using tens and ones. We then looked at part-whole models where the children partitioned the numbers. We saw some great reasoning when completing our tasks.
Ite- "There are 8 ones"
Alana- "41 comes next"
Science
We have been learning about properties of materials. We have explored a range of materials including ice, wood, rocks, metal and fabrics. The children were asked to describe the materials using words such as absorbent, soft, transparent, opaque and hard. We have also used a range of paper towels to check the absorbency and record what towel would be most efficient if we spilt water. We found out that the disposable cloth would be best!
Oliver- "The glass is transparent, I can see through it"
Toni- "I am starting the timer"
Geography
We have been learning about the countries and capital cities in Great Britain. We have labelled maps in the correct place and coloured how much each place takes up. The children also learnt about famous landmarks that are visited in each place. We learnt a fantastic song to help us remember, have a listen.
Ivan- "Edinburgh is in Scotland"
Lucas- "I know where Big Ben is"
Lily- "I put Wales on the map"
