Year 1: What We Are Learning w/b 1st Dec 2025

Year 1: What We Are Learning

“I’ve made a snowflake and I did it all by myself,” said Arianna.

In Literacy we have been learning how to plan a long write about a sequence of events in the story Traction Man. The children wrote key words regarding what happened and how Traction Man felt for each event. They then completed a draft copy and made some edits to correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. Next week the children will be writing their final copies!

In Geography this week, we have been learning about the different ways children travel to school around the world. The children talked about how they get to school and thought about why our journeys might be easier for example, because we live close to school, have safe pavements to walk on and good roads for cars and buses. To finish, we compared our own journeys with those of children in other countries and discussed the similarities and differences. Year 1 really enjoyed sharing their ideas and learning more about the world around them!

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

S

Forest School: Final session for Beech this term.

This was the final week of Forest School for Beech class’s first block.

The children listened to the story ‘The Amazing Mud Cake’. The boy in the story, Olli, had made a special mud cake for his family, but he felt disappointed when they didn’t enjoy it. The next day, however, Olli was delighted to discover that while his family hadn’t liked the mud cake, the mini beasts of the forest had eaten it all up!

Inspired by the story, the children set to work making their very own mud pies for the mini beasts. They mixed mud and water, and decorated their creations with sticks, stones, leaves and other natural treasures they could find.

The children also collaborated on some large-scale art by brushing powder paint onto wet sheets. This created beautiful, colourful patterns.

Many children also took part in a winter scavenger hunt, marking off the items they could find on their sheets.

To end the session, we played the game called Foxes and Rabbits, which the children really enjoyed.

I’ll be back with the children after the Easter break.

Year1 and 2 Spelling WC 08.12.25

Dear Year 1 and Year 2 Parents and Carers,

We would like to inform you that spelling lists will not be sent home next week. This decision has been made to allow time for the Read Write Inc. (RWI) assessments, which will be taking place throughout the week. These assessments are an important part of monitoring the children’s progress and ensuring they are placed in the most appropriate groups for their learning. If you would like to support your children with this at home, please ensure they are reading their RWI books.

As this is already a particularly busy time of year, we want to ensure that the children are not overwhelmed. We will complete one last spelling test on the following week.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Terrific Team Building in Year 2

Terrific Team Building in Year 2

"We changed the order of our line to make us faster." Riya, Mulberry

This half term in PE, the children have been taking part in a range of exciting team-building activities designed to help them develop important collaborative skills. They have worked through a variety of challenges, some using equipment such as cones, hoops and ropes, and others that relied solely on their bodies and imagination.

"This is a great team." Mason, Pine

Throughout these sessions, the children have demonstrated wonderful reciprocity as they supported one another, as well as resilience when tasks became tricky. They have been resourceful, thinking creatively to solve problems, and reflective, considering what went well and how they could improve as a team.

"It's so hard when you can't see anything. I need my partner to hold my hand." Abshara, Rowan

It has been fantastic to see their confidence and cooperation grow each week.

Mulberry Class Forest School - 1.12.25

Mulberry Class Forest School - 1.12.25

Monday was the final session in this block for Mulberry class. They were very excited to be coming on the fire and toasted marshmallows that they squashed into brioche. Everyone thought they tasted great. Hot chocolates were enjoyed.

We had time for some games and free choice where the children chose to use binoculars, magnify glasses, compasses or digging. There was also the opportunity to make a nature inspired decoration on a wooden disc using a star cut from a leaf and eco friendly glitter.

See you all in the summer Mulberry class!

Year 1: What We Are Learning w/b 24th Nov 2025

Year 1: What We Are Learning

This week in maths, we have been learning how to subtract using the part–whole model and the bar model.

Children explored how a “whole” can be split into parts and how taking one part away helps them find what’s left. Using simple diagrams, they practised drawing and solving subtraction problems, building a strong visual understanding of what subtraction really means.

Year 1 followed step by step instructions to create a sliding Gingerbread Man scene as part of our DT project. The children used glue, scissors and strips of paper to create the character sliders. They used a pencil and ruler to carefully create the hole for the character sliders to slip through.

In Science this week the children have been exploring the processes of melting and freezing. They were set an exciting challenge: to save small toys trapped inside blocks of ice!

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!
