What we are learning

Another successful week in Year 1. It’s hard to believe how fast the time is going this year, just over half way through the academic year. The children have worked so hard but there is still plenty to do and learn!

Please make sure that you continue to read and complete spellings with your children. It’s so important that all the children have access to learning at home as well as in school.

Literacy

Breaking News! A whale has been found washed up on Southend beach!

This week the children have become journalists. They have written News articles all about how the whale has been found and what the little  Snail and people have done to help save him. The children were asked to write in past tense and to use some exciting adjectives in their article.

Maths

Magnificent Math this week! Year 1 has been focusing on Mass.  The children  have used the scales to find the Mass of different objects. Not only have they been using blocks to measure,  but have also been comparing different objects using the language of heavier and lighter.

Topic

Geography

Climate and weather has been the topic in Geography this week. The children were introduced to the Northern and southern hemispheres as well as knowing that the closer a county is to the equator the hotter it will become. We also had  discussions about how the ‘Earth spins and the sun does not move’. - Ronnie (Apricot)

We all like to be beside the seaside!

Apricot Class had a transformation this week by creating a Beach in the Classroom. They are trying to bring the sunshine inside. The children are enjoying playing in the sand, having an Ice cream van which is not only helping encourage play and imagination but they are also using Money and counting!

Computing

This week children have been learning about the keyboard and what the different keys do. They have been practicing this by completing a fun game on the iPad.

Science

We have been learning about Food chains in science. It was great to hear that so many children are using scientific language when sorting animals into herbivores and carnivores. The children completed their own food chains by drawing, cutting and sticking.

RE

We have been continuing with the Easter story this week. The children were asked to explain why we have Easter eggs ( not just because they are delicious!) hot cross buns and baby animals. They were able to explain that it represents ‘new life’. The children also looked at ways in which Christians celebrate the holiday and how different families do this in different ways.
