Year 1: What We Are Learning W/C 16th March 2026

Year 1: What We Are Learning

This week in RE, the children have been learning about how Sikh families welcome a new baby into the world. We explored the special naming ceremony, where families visit the Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship) and choose a name for their baby using the first letter from a randomly opened page of the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy book). Children also learned that Sikh boys are given the name Singh and girls are given the name Kaur. To help bring this learning to life, the children took part in a fun classroom activity. They selected a book, found a letter from a random page and created their own Sikh-style name using that letter, followed by Singh or Kaur. The children really enjoyed being creative and sharing their names with the class!

In DT we have been making our final hand puppet designs. The puppets are based on the zones of regulation and our brief is to create hand puppets that will support nursery children to learn about the zones through play! This week we cut out our felt pieces and joined them together using a running stitch.

Over the past few weeks, the children have worked incredibly hard to become master bakers! The children have designed their own cakes, written step by step instructions on how to bake them and taken a trip to Lidl to buy the required ingredients.

This week, the classrooms turned into bakeries! The children followed their written instructions to bake and decorate their cakes. They even had their own cake party where they ate a slice and discussed the process of making them. Well done Year 1 the cakes looked amazing but most importantly, they tasted delicious too!
