Year 1 - What we have been learning

We hope you have all had a good week, the children have worked tremendously hard this week and have produced some amazing work. The effort the children are putting into their work has been great.  The Year One team would also like to say ‘ Thank you’ to those parents who read and practice spelling with their children on a weekly basis. It makes lots of difference!

Literacy

Children have been busy this week in Literacy. Year 1 completed their first ‘Role on the wall’ activity. The children discussed what they thought Traction man’s personality is like. They then wrote their idea on a  Post-it and stuck them onto a large Traction man. They used the same method  when using adjectives to describe what Traction man was wearing. They all enjoyed the activity and used some great adjectives to describe the Superhero.

Maths

In math this week the children have been working with 2 digit numbers and finding their place value. The children were asked to make ‘teen’ numbers using the Dienes and Ten frames. This helped the children to show how many tens and ones are in each number. They also completed a worksheet to highlight their knowledge of numbers and to continue practicing writing the numeral and word.

Next week, children will be looking at an addition with numbers within 20. This will include learning about Number Bonds to 10 and 20 and using number lines to help with adding 2 numbers together.

Have a go at these number bond songs!

PE

Apricot class took part in PE this week. The lesson took place inside and children  got to enjoy playing different games. The children also started to learn about the Respiration system. They were also excited to tell other adults all about the heart and how important it is.

Alfie - ‘ Did you know that the Heart pumps blood all around your body’.

Mikail - ‘ If you haven’t got a heart then the blood can’t go around your body’.

ICT

This week, the children had fun as they learnt to program BeeBots, give them commands and investigate how they would move along different routes.

Forest School

Year one was very excited to explore with the ice today. They had great fun trying to crack the ice and see how long it took depending on the thickness of the ice. Some children created some ice art on the ground. There were games to keep us warm along with warm drinks too. Then we found a whole variety of sticks and turned them into all sorts of things including microphones, guitars and wands. A great morning, well done Walnut Class.

History

Continuing from last week, the children have been learning more about Mary Seacole's life and how she helped all the soldiers in the Crimean war. The children wrote detailed facts on what they have learnt so far

Science

This week the children have been looking at the different properties of Material. They have been talking and writing about how different materials feel and bringing scientific language into their learning. Eg. Transparent and Opaque

RE

In RE the children become actors! The children were learning about Parables and discussing why Jesus told parables to the people. The children watched a clip from the story The lost sheep. They then acted out the story of how important it is not to leave someone out.
