Year 2 Star Writers

Nina and Alice are our excellent Star Writers this week!

The girls really impressed when using different sentence types including, statements, exclamations and questions. First, we reflected on the holidays and wrote exclamations to describe our Christmas.

 Here are some of the girls exclamations:

"What a gorgeous Christmas tree it was!" Alice.

"How disgusting the brussel sprouts tasted!" Nina 

 

Next, we cast our minds forward and wrote our New Years Resolutions, thinking about what we would like to achieve this year. Lastly we wrote questions about what we want to find out in 2017. Both of the girls used the correct punctuation in addition to working on their presentation when writing their sentences which is why they are worthy Star Writers. 

 

I especially loved the New Years Resolutions which included: getting ready for School themselves, helping Mum at home, learn to swim and to join their letters by the end of Year 2.  

 

"My new years resolution is to get to School a bit earlier so I can have even more learning time to make my brain grow!" Nina

 

What a great resolution that is Nina! I can't wait to help your brain grow even more!

 

 

 

 

Year 2's Mysterious Chest...

The children in Year 2 found a mysterious treasure chest in the sand pit this week. The children, as well as the teachers were astounded, yet baffled as to where it had come from. Inside the chest they discovered many interesting objects, such as: a compass, telescope, a picture of a man, a Spanish Flag, an American flag, a sailors hat, a boat, a mango, an avocado and even a picture of Santa!

What could all this mean? 

Accompanying the items inside the chest was a letter addressed to the Year 2 children from Mrs Nicholls. In the letter Mrs Nicholls explains that she found the trunk with the objects inside but she has no idea what they mean! Mrs Nicholls has asked the children in Year 2 to use their investigating skills to find information about the objects and what pieces them together. Mrs Nicholls has given the children the whole half term to figure out what each item is and why they are in the trunk to then report back to her.

The children are VERY excited and cant wait to get cracking on the clues!

"Oh my god it's treasure in the sandpit!" exclaimed Kara.

"Why is there an avocado?" questioned John.

Today, the children haven't stopped talking about the chest and their theories about it. Here are some of the current ideas the children have:

• Santa has been abducted by pirates and taken to Spain.
• Maybe there are another 3 chests to be found by us.
• The man in the picture could be related to Mrs Nicholls!
• Pirates have lost it and we need to search for a treasure map to find out what the keys are for.
• The ship sank and these are the clues about what happened. 

Who knows? Let's wait and see...

Congratulations Gabriela and Nela on their fantastic writing this week. The children were set the task of writing their own version on 'We're going on a bear hunt'. Gabriela and Nela both included adjectives in their writing, as well as using the phonics knowledge to sound out their writing.

Well done on a fantastic piece of writing, keep up the great work!

We will begin by looking at shapes and objects and then move on to quantities.

We will focus on finding a half, then finding a quarter.

Below is the Learning Challenge for this term. As always, we are excited to celebrate the completed work, so please encourage your child to bring in the work they do. We will celebrate this with a certificate in our E for Excellence assembly.  

The 'Joys' of Christmas!

The 'Joys' of Christmas

The children were very lucky to end the autumn term with a visit from two of our Year 1 parents, Mr and Mrs Joy.

They very kindly offered to bring in a range of brass instruments from the Salvation Army. The children were taught a bit about each instrument and the talented Mr Joy also played many of them for the children.

Mr and Mrs Joy also taught the children how to play a note on a range of the instruments- which turned out to be harder than it looked!

A BIG thank you to Mr and Mrs joy for offering their time and talent. It was a lovely experience for the children who all enjoyed the afternoon!
