Year 1: What We Are Learning W/B 5th Jan 2026

Year 1: What We Are Learning

“‘I am going to tell my Mum this, so that she can help the world too!” said Eden.

This week the children enjoyed exploring a new non-fiction text, 10 Things I Can Do to Help My World. They learned simple, practical ways they can care for the environment and make positive choices every day. The book inspired thoughtful discussions about how even small actions can make a big difference.

In maths this week Year 1 have been recapping number bonds to increase their developing fluency as well as methods for addition and subtraction. They have also been learning about 3D shape names including: sphere, cone, triangular-based pyramid, cylinder, cube and cuboid. We also discussed the properties of the shapes including what the shapes of the faces were, whether they had curved or flat faces and we learnt about vertices and edges.

In Art this week the children have created simple prints using their hands, experimented with textured objects to make rubbings and pushed found objects into plasticine to create interesting patterns and prints. They enjoyed discovering how different materials leave different marks and showed great curiosity and creativity while working. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they explored new ways to make art and shared their work with pride.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!
