A big well done to the children on their first week at Forest School. Their listening was amazing, which meant we had a super session.
As it was a windy, cold, and drizzly day, we started the session inside the classroom. The children each chose a special Forest School name for themselves. They picked either something in nature that started with the same sound as their own name, or something they simply liked (my Forest School name is Kate Kestrel!). After this, they were given their own Forest School badge, which they decorated with their chosen nature name. The children will now wear their badge every week at Forest School.
Next, the children got themselves ready to go outside. We talked about the importance of dressing appropriately for the weather. If they are dressed correctly, they will have a happy and fun time; however, if they are not dressed properly, they may become cold and wet, which can make the experience less enjoyable.
Once we were dressed, we headed outside where we played a few games. These games taught the children the different Forest School calls and how to respond to them (for example, when they hear a certain call, they must stop, stand still, and listen). The games also helped them learn the boundaries of Forest School and understand the importance of staying within them to keep themselves safe.
Before returning to school, the children enjoyed a hot squash and a biscuit while I read them a story. The children voted for which story they would like to hear, and Stick Man by Julia Donaldson was the clear winner.
We look forward to coming together again next week!
