Year One - Learning Blog 08.11.2024

Year one have had a fabulous first week back filled with lots of fun learning opportunities.

In Literacy this week the children were writing a recount about what they did during half term. The wriiting focus was to write in past tense, use capital letters, full stops and capital letters in the correct places.

In Maths this week the children were introduced to the part whole model which is used to partition numbers. This half term the Maths focus is addition and subtraction within 10.

In Science the children were learning about different materials and exploring their properties.

Afrahim - Glass is fragile this means it  will break easily.

Riya-  Spoons are made from metal they are shiny.

Karen - This table is made from wood it is dull.

This week Beech class had their first fun-filled week at Forest School.

Firstly, we had so many children who remembered to bring their welly boots to school. This made getting ready for Forest School very quick so we could have a nice long session outside.

Thank you to all the parents/carers who have so far bought in waterproof for their child. If you haven’t done so yet,  please remember them for next week’s session, as we will be going outside even if it’s raining.

Once outside the children decided on their Forest School name by choosing either an animal that started with the same sound as their name or their favourite animal (my Forest School name is Kate Kestrel.) They then all decided on an action to go with their name and we all copied their action.  The children then designed their own Forest School badge with their new name. They will then wear these badges every week for Forest School.

The children learn a few new games which helped them understand the boundaries of the Forest School area. These games were ‘Foxes and Rabbits’ and ‘123 where are you?’

There was also time for the children to explore the Forest School area. They were given a challenge to find natural things that weren’t green or brown. Many of them rose to the challenge finding yellow fieldcap mushrooms, white fungi in a stick, grey feathers, and red berries.

Have a great weekend, we look forward to seeing all the children on Monday.

Egg Box Junk Modelling

                               8th November 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you have all enjoyed the half term break with your lovely children.

As was stated in the Autumn Curriculum letter, the focus text for literacy this half term is The Adventures of Egg Box Dragon.  Each child in Year 2 will have the pleasure of designing and creating their own egg box dragon. As a result of this, we want to appeal to parents to give us empty egg boxes (cardboard) and other junk modelling materials for the children to use.

Thank you for your help.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Fayefunmi

Year 2 What We Are Learning

Literacy

This week, we started our unit on The Adventures of

Egg Box Dragon. The children drew their own

impressions of Egg Box Dragon and wrote a

character description of Egg Box Dragon packed

full with amazing adjectives to bring their character

to life. You will find further help below.

Maths

This week pupils focused on solving addition problems. They used their number bonds to add two 1 digit numbers together to make 10 before moving on to adding 3 one digit numbers together.

Science

This term we are exploring materials. We will be learning

the properties of a variety of everyday materials.

To support our learning each class will have access to

a science station. This will allow the children to touch

and explore the materials.

Forest School

Today Mulberry class were excited to be back at
forest school. We played games, reminded
ourselves of how to stay safe and made
Elder fireworks. Then the children enjoyed playing
with their fireworks as they threw them up in the air.
Well done to those who remembered their wellies
and waterproofs today. If you forgot them please
bring them next week, we don’t want to get
caught out by the weather.

Year 1 Parents - Reading

Dear Parents/Carers,

As you know, daily reading plays a crucial role in a child's progress. At Broadford, our mission is to ensure that all children are reading fluently by the end of Key Stage 1. To achieve this, we need your support. Please ensure that you read with your child every day, record their reading progress in the reading record, and make sure they bring their reading book and folder on their designated reading days. If your child has lost their reading folder, please inform the class teacher so that we can provide a replacement.

Thank you for your continued support.

Year 1 and Year 2 Parents

Dear Parents/Carers,

As the children have settled into Year One and Year Two, from next week (11th November 2024), they will be expected to walk down to their classrooms independently. We understand that this may feel a little daunting at first, but please be assured that staff in both Year One and Year Two will be at the classroom doors to greet the children and help them settle into their morning routines.

If you need to speak with the class teachers about your child, please feel free to email the Year 1 and Year 2 mailbox or contact the school office to pass on any relevant information.

Any questions please do not hesitate to ask

Kind regards,

Miss Hamilton and Mrs. Fayefunmi
