Homework at Broadford Primary School

 

At Broadford Primary School we believe homework is about balance.

We understand that homework can be an ideal opportunity for consolidation for some, a battle for others, an opportunity for creativity for some of our pupils or quality time for carer and child in what can often be a very busy week.

Daily Homework Expectations

There are home-based tasks that we know help your child at school.  These are fundamental and must be completed every day:

These are 'on average' expectations:
- 15 minutes of reading per night (EYFS. KS1 and KS2)
- 15 minutes of mathematics per night (KS1 & KS2)
- 15 minutes of spelling per night (KS1 & KS2)

Y1 - Y2: Homework Bingo - optional

We understand children have commitments outside of school but if you have time, children in KS1 are encouraged to take part in 4 or more learning tasks from the Bingo cards at home.  This will be celebrated at school.  Please follow this link for this term's Homework Bingo.

Y3 - Y6: Worldly Wise Challenge - optional

Children in KS2 take part in weekly Worldly Wise assemblies where they learn 'a little about a lot'.  The Worldly Wise Challenge is an opportunity for children to carry out further research linked to the half termly topic.  Please follow this link for more information on this term's topic.

Fact Hunter and SPAG Detectives - optional

Each week, children can solve a SPAG error or complete their own research for an interesting fact on a given topic (click here to see this term's).  In recognition of applying SPaG skills to real life situations and investigating crimes against the English Language AND in recognition of insatiable appetite for knowledge

and ability to sniff out amazing facts, children will be celebrated in school with their peers.

Why don't you have a go at completing 4 tasks on the bingo sheet . You can choose any line that goes horizontally or vertically. You are more than welcome to complete extra tasks or rows! 

Please colour in squares as you complete them. You do not have to send work in each week.  Work at a pace that works for you and your child.  Ask your class teacher for a printed copy if you need one.

Rowan Class - Forest School

 Rowan class had lots of fun exploring with music and sounds at forest school today. We started off looking at st playing a variety of instruments - tapping, shading, scrapping and blowing. The children then made their own woodland sounds with small stones, shells, leaves and sticks. Some even begin to experiment with writing their own notation and performing it. A packed morning of forest school.

E for Excellence

Apricot: Harvey 

Harvey has worked so hard in both Literacy and History. He has been using his knowledge and ideas to create detailed sentences. Well done! 

Beech:

  Mavis has been awarded the E for Excellence award in recognition of her brilliant efforts in every lesson. Mavis has produced amazing pieces of Maths and Literacy. She has also been an excellent role model this week, demonstrating the 4R’s, especially showing reciprocity by working well with others. Well done Mavis!

Walnut: Joshua

Joshua, you have earned this award for using your mathematical skills to conscientiously  find number bonds to 20 in different ways. Super effort!

Apricot: Eric 

Eric completed detailed sentences for History on why Mary Seacole was a real superhero. His writing was clear and neat with finger spaces in all the right places. 

Beech: 

Noah has been awarded this award for his amazing descriptive writing. Noah wrote sentences as his character that he created in the classroom. He remembered all of his sentence rules. Well done Noah!

Walnut: Mateo

Well done Mateo for using appropriate first person pronouns to write a speech for your character. Also,  you used  amazing adjectives to a great effect in your writing.  Brilliant effort!

Year 1 - What we have been learning

This term is going so quickly and the children have had another full week of learning. Year 1 has also been completing Chinese New year activities and learning about the new year story. Please continue to read with your children and write in your child's reading record. 

Literacy

This week in Literacy the children have been writing in first person. They have designed a character and thought about what they would say. The children enjoyed turning into their character and expressing what they would say. We experienced  some very kind characters as well as some very scary ones! Children have also been implementing the Capital letters, finger spaces and Full stops in their writing. 

Maths

Addition fun this week! Year 1 has been using different methods for addition this week. The children have been using number lines to add together numbers within 20. The children were to jump on the number to find the answers to the number sentences. They also had a practical lesson of using the Ten frames to make number sentences within 20. They  practiced writing number sentences using the correct mathematical symbols. 

Next week, the children will be learning about doubles. Then they will be using their double knowledge to help them to add.

Topic work 

History

What makes a real superhero? Why do you think Mary Seacole could be a superhero? 

Here are some examples of questions that Year 1 has been asked this week in History. The children were asked to write about why they thought Mary Seacole was a real life superhero. The children completed descriptive sentences. Eg. ‘Mary Seacole is brave because she went to the Crimean war to help the soldiers.’ 

Theo the reading dog! 

Apricot and Beech Class had a lovely visit from Theo this week. He loves coming into the classroom and getting spoilt by all the children. Not only does he receive lots of cuddles and strokes but he also listens to the children read. Is it definitely a treat when he comes for a visit. 

 Forest School

Science 

Year 1 has been creating houses made from different materials. They made predictions on which material would be the best for the 3 little pigs to live in. We had houses made from lollipop sticks, paper, wooden blocks and plastic. (Lego) We completed the experiment by letting the Big bad wolf blow the houses down. 

Computing 

The children have been experimenting with the Beebots, programming them to go through mazes that have different surfaces and textures. The children also had access to the Beebots app on the Ipad. 

Design and technology 

Apricot class had their DT lesson this week. Previously the children had designed their very own puppets. From that design they started to create the puppets. Children used different materials including felt to create the puppets. It was a really good way for the children to see their drawings come to life and to practice their cutting skills.
