Year 2 Week 3 Learning

We have reached the end of another fun filled week in Year 2. Take a look at what we have been up to this week.

Literacy

In literacy, we have continued our work on ´Lost and Found´ by Oliver Jeffers. This week, the children have been learning a summary of the story. We have all become actors and actresses this week, using expressions and actions to help us to remember the story.

This then supported us in creating story mountains. We thought carefully about the introduction, build up, problem and conclusion drawing pictures to represent the story. We also included important vocabulary that we want to use when we begin to plan our own versions of the story next week.

Maths

Our work on multiplication is truly underway and we are beginning to gain a great understanding of arrays. We have continued to use the vocabulary 'lots of', 'each group', 'rows' and 'columns' to support us with this. We have been representing multiplication problems by drawing our own arrays.

Science

Our ready, steady, grow topic continues! This week, we have been planting cress. We will be testing the conditions that plants need to grow by placing some of our seeds by the window and some in a dark cupboard. We made predictions that the seeds by the window will grow better based on our knowledge that plants need light to grow. We have marked the days on our class calendars that we will check the cress and write down our observations. In our self-led learning time, we have been checking our 'beans in a bag'. There has been lots of wonderful discussions about what we have observed.

'That one is growing a root!' - Noah

'This one hasn't grown yet, maybe we didn't give it enough water' - Rojure

'I think they will reach the top of the bag soon' - Dina

‘It looks like popcorn when it starts to pop!’ - Billy

'I think in 3 days time it will change colour' - Olivia

'I think it looks like  a tiny insect because the roots remind me of  little legs'- Georgia

Geography

Our fact files on Antarctica continue and this week it has been all about weather. We have researched the weather in Antarctica and thought about what we would pack in our suitcases if we were going on a expedition there (some of us were more keen on that idea than others after finding out the temperatures!) We have had lots of interesting discussions, thinking about the differences between the weather in Antarctica and the weather in the United Kingdom and the impact that this has.

Computing

We are learning how to programme! We have used the app 'Scratch Jnr' app on the iPads to follow instructions to grow and shrink a character. We learnt how it is important to input an algorithm to make the character do different things.
