Happy New Year and welcome back! We are very excited to begin a new year of learning in Year 2!
The children have had a great first week back and have been busy immersing themselves in their new topics.
Literacy
In literacy this half term, we will be focusing on the text 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. We have started by reading the text and thinking about the setting of the story. We will be doing lots of work on Antarctica and the children were keen to dive straight in by using their sense to begin to write descriptions of The South Pole. They came into class to an Antarctica soundscape. Imagining that they had just arrive din the South Pole, like the characters in our story, they began to think about all the sounds they could hear. They then moved around the classroom to the see, hear and feel tables where they explored different images of Antarctica, ice cubes and soundscape videos to enable them to think carefully about each of the senses. We were very impressed with the fantastic adjectives that the children came up with. They were then able to produce some brilliant setting descriptions from their plans.
'The frosty, fragile snowflake landed on my nose' - Rojure
'The cold, strong winds pushed me along' - Eason
'The cute, fluffy penguins were siding on the freezing ice' - Laynie-Rae
Maths
This half term in maths, we will begin our work on multiplication. The children have been focusing on equal groups this week in preparation for this. They have been looking at arrays and thinking about how many are in each row and how many rows there are. This has supported them in finding the total number of objects.
'There are 5 in each row and there are 4 rows. So we need to count in 5's!' - Georgia
' 4 lots of 3 is 12. Altogether there are 12!' - Evie
Science
This week, we have begun our planting topic in Science. This began with the children looking into seed dispersal. They looked at different types of seeds and how they travel. The children enjoyed thinking about travelling seeds and how some of them 'catch a ride' on animals or insects and how other are dispersed in water or by wind.
PSHE
In PSHE this week, we have been learning about 'the zones of regulation' (Leah M. Kuypers). We discussed different types of emotions and how we might act when we are feeling this way. We practiced making the facial expressions to go alongside them. As a class, we acknowledged that we all experience different emotions and that this is perfectly okay. We have been learning what each zone means and have been practicing the vocabulary to support us to explain our emotions more effectively.
