Dear Parents and Carers,
Year Two - Curriculum Newsletter
Welcome back to the new academic year! We are enjoying spending time with the children and returning to school life. We have planned lots of exciting topics and stories to engage the children and we have explained the curriculum we will be following for the first half term below. If you would like any further information please email year2@broadford.havering.sch.uk.
Homework:
Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:
· 15 minutes reading to an adult and note in the reading record
· 15 minutes practicing spellings
· Rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)
Spellings:
The children will receive spellings each Monday in a spelling book. These words will usually be either ‘red words’ (words that cannot be sounded out) or ‘high frequency words’ (words that they will use in the writing frequently). Please practise these spellings with your child each night. To start with we will revise Year 1 spelling words in order to put the children into spelling groups.
Please ensure that your child brings their red spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the book as this allows you to see their results. We will then send new spellings home in the book each Monday.
You may find that some words come up in the tests more than once.
Curriculum Information
We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this half term. If you would like to make any suggestions of what you or your child would like to learn in relation to the topics taught, please get in touch through our Year Two email . We welcome any suggestions you may have.

Before we begin to study the Great Fire of London we will begin by looking at the location of London. Some of the skills we will focus on are; - Using basic geographical vocabulary to refer to key human features, including: city, town, village, factory, farm, house, office, shop.
- Use maps, and globes to identify the United Kingdon and its countries, continents and oceans.
- Use simple compass directions to describe the location of features and routes on a map.
- Use aerial photographs and plan perspectives to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features.
We will start to look at ‘The Great Fire of London’. In the first half term the children will be focusing on these history skills: Using phrases and words like: ‘before’, ‘after’, ‘past’, ‘present’, ‘then’ and ‘now’; in their historical learning? Using the words ‘past’ and ‘present’ accurately? Using a range of appropriate words and phrases to describe the past?
