Year 1: What We Are Learning W/C 9th Feb 2026

Year 1: What We Are Learning

“I saw someone put litter on the floor, that is not good!” said Mamadou.

In maths the children revisited patterns in their environment. The children were able to create, continue and correct patterns including ABAB, ABCABC, ABBC and more! The children even extended this to begin giving their pattern a lettered code, one of the earliest forms of algebra, where a letter stands for something else. Wow!

This week, we became eco-warriors! Following in the footsteps of Greta Thunberg and Sir David Attenborough, we headed outside for a very important litter pick. We have been reading ‘10 Things I Can Do To Help My World’, and today we put those words into action by tidying our school environment. We searched high and low for different materials that did not belong on the ground to keep our local wildlife safe. We learned that just like Greta Thunberg, even children can make a huge difference in protecting the Earth!

In PSHE this week, Year 1 enjoyed a lesson called “Our Special People” where we explored the important people in our lives who help, care for and support us. Using a fun balloon activity, the children thought about how special people “lift us up” by helping us feel safe, loved and happy. We discussed different types of families and support networks and how everyone’s family is unique and special. The children shared ideas beautifully and showed great respect when listening to others.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!
