Year 1 in Action - 06.12.2024

In Literacy this week the children have been working extremely hard to rewrite the story of Goldilocks in Space. The focused on using exciting adjectives and conjunctions to join simple sentences together.

Next week, they will be writing a descriptive piece of writing. Below is a video to help the children to use adjectives in their writing.

In maths this week the children were learning to subtract single digits. They used concrete and pictorial resources.
All the children have worked extremely hard within this area-

Below is a link to a subtraction game to consolidate their learning -

Science-

In this exciting hands-on science lesson, children became little investigators as they explored the question: Do materials absorb water? Through observation and experimentation, the children tested a variety of everyday materials like paper, fabric, plastic, and metal to discover which ones soak up water and which stayed dry . They developed key skills such as making predictions and recording observations.

Forest School

As they arrived at Forest School this week, the children in Beech Class were very excited to see there was a fire. The children were taught how to keep safe around the fire, including the ‘respect position’ (one knee up and one knee down.)

The children shared what they already knew about fires. I then explained that in order for a fire to happen there has to be three things and if one of these things isn’t there, the fire will not burn. They are fuel (which today was wood), heat (made using spark with a flint and steel) and oxygen (which we can’t see but is all around us in the air.)

All the children enjoyed toasting a marshmallow on the fire. Whilst around the fire, one child said, ‘This is the best day ever!’  The children then ate their marshmallow between two chocolate biscuits (s’mores) with some tasty hot chocolate.

They then made a  Christmas candle decoration using clay, pine sprigs and evergreen leaves. If their decoration arrives home a little broken,  I have explained to the children you can remake them whilst the clay is still soft and then leave the clay to dry out. Once the clay is dry, the foliage should stay in.

We finished the session with the Christmas story ‘Norman saves Christmas.’

This was the last session for Beech class until Easter!
