Year 1 105 Books to Read Before You Leave Broadford Primary

Year 1- What we have been learning

Welcome back! We hope you have had an enjoyable half term. Now it's time to get back into school and learn! Please could you make sure that  you are completing the reading each week and practicing your child's spelling for the test on Friday. The children have also been given extra spelling sheets to help them to not only remember the spelling but to put the word into a sentence, this will then help with the understanding and meaning of the word.

Literacy

Children in Year 1 had been on a Bear hunt this week. They got on their wellies and raincoats and acted out the story. The children enjoyed bringing drama into literacy this week. It also helped them to write descriptive sentences of each setting in the book. Exploring different vocabulary to make the writing interesting.

Next week, the children are going to be reading The Queen's Handbag and looking at different London Landmarks.

Maths

This week, the children  had the opportunity to further develop their subtraction skills by finding out the difference using Ten Frames and  counting back on a number line. Additionally, they learnt to use the correct mathematical symbols in their number sentences.

Next week, they will be learning to count to 50 and solving problems within 50.

Topic

Science

This week in science ,Year 1 has started a new topic all about Animals. Over the next few weeks children will be learning about different types of animals including Mammals, Fish, Reptiles, Amphibians and Birds. This week they learnt about Fish and different creatures that can be found in the sea. Children completed a fact file worksheet of what they had found out.

Are you a monster?

On Thursday children took part in a world wide webinar. The children were read a story by  author Guilherme Karsten called Are you a monster? The children really enjoyed the story of a little monster who was trying to train children to be a monster. But at the end someone gets a little fright!

Year 1 Spring 2 Curriculum Letter

                         22nd February 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year One - Curriculum Newsletter

Welcome back and we hope you have had a restful half term break. We hope you find this letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions relating to the curriculum @ year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk

Homework:

Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:

  • 15 minutes reading to themselves or an adult and note in the reading record

  • 15 minutes practicing spellings

  • 15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)

  • If children would like to attempt an additional challenge, we have our weekly math challenge which can be found in the Year 1/2 blog page.

Spellings:

The children will receive spellings each Monday in a red exercise book. These words will usually be either ‘red words’ (words that cannot be sounded out) or ‘high frequency words’ (words that they will use in the writing frequently) or green words (words that can be sounded out). Please practise these spellings with your child each night.

Please ensure that your child brings their red spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the book as this allows you to see their results. We will then send new spellings home in the book each Monday.

105 Reading Books Year 1

Please ensure you complete your child’s tracker and return to their class teacher. New copies of the tracker have been sent home. Please request a new tracker if needed. year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk

Trips/Visits

  • We will be visiting  a church as  children have been learning about Christianity in RE.  Further information to be sent closer to date.
