Scrumdiddlyumptious Baking - Group 1

Today, the first groups in Apricot Class, Beech Class and Walnut Class baked their cakes! This morning the children measured out the ingredients and worked as a team to make the cake mixture. They mixed self-raising flour, caster sugar, eggs and butter and buttered some cake tins. The teachers then put the cakes in the oven.

After lunch, the children spent time measuring ingredients to make buttercream and icing. They then worked together to implement their design and decorate their cakes!

Once the cakes were finished the children got to taste them!

We hope the children enjoyed their experience and that their families enjoy the cake that they've brought home for you to try!

Week 3 learning

Maths

In maths this week we have been looking at word problems. We have been learning how to look for the important information in order to solve different problems.

The children have to:
  • Read the problem
  • Underline the numbers and any key words
  • Find the numbers on the hundred square and solve the calculation
  • Write down the question and answer in full
  • Check their work

Next week, the children will continue to focus on using the hundred square to add and subtract 2 digit numbers. They must remember to jump down when adding tens and forward when adding ones. When subtraction, they must remember to jump up when taking away tens and backwards when subtracting ones.

Key Vocabulary: hundred square, jump up, jump down, jump across, jump backwards, tens, ones

Science

This week we were identifying common garden flowers. We went on a hunt around the school and the children found lots of different plants. We then went back to the classroom and using our plant identifier app, we found out what they were called, some interesting facts about each one and recorded them in our books.

Next week we will be looking at what plants need to survive.

Key vocabulary- air, oxygen, water, rain, soil, sun, roots, stem, petals

Outside

This week in the outside area, the children decided to collect lots of stones. After they had a bucket full they wanted to decorate them. So we got the pains and paint brushes out and the children got creative by carefully painting pictures and patterns on each stone.

Topic

This week we went to Lidl to buy our ingredients for cake making next week. The children loved it! They got to choose all of their own decorations and pay for it using the self-service till.

Next week we will be making the cakes. We are going to be focusing on measuring ingredients.

Key Vocabulary: grams, flour, eggs, sugar, measure, pour, mix, whish, beat, bake

Year 1's Learning, Week 2

Year 1's Learning, Week 2

Literacy

In Literacy this week we have been writing recipes and shopping lists for our cake baking! We've had to use our instructions writing skills to write clear steps to bake a cake. We've had to think about ingredients and decide what we will be decorating our cakes with. We used our recipes to help us think of all the things that we will need to buy on our shopping trip to Lidl next week.

Next week we will be writing invitations for our tea party that we will be hosting at school with our friends. We will be making sure that we use our full stops at the end of our sentences and our capital letters for the beginning of our sentences, for days of the week and for names!

Check out this video about the importance of full stops and capital letters.

Key Vocabulary: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December

Maths

This week we have been continuing with place value and adding 10 using our number squares. The children have learnt the quick way to add 10 by jumping down on the hundred squares. Some children have been crossing the 10 barriers and adding together bigger numbers. The children are now more familiar with using the hundred square for addition and are more confident in counting on the hundred square.

Next week in Maths we will be looking at some addition and subtraction word problems. The children will need to read the problems and underline key numbers and words to help them work out the number sentence. They will then need to solve the problems using resources such as the number line and hundred square.

Key Vocabulary: hundred square, addition, subtraction, add, plus, all together, take away, minus, left.

Outdoor

This week's focus was bug hunting outside! the children used the new science equipment to search for minibeasts!

Key vocabulary: bugs, minibeasts, soil, habitat

Design and Technology

Next week we are going to Lidl to buy ingredients to make the amazing cakes that we have designed. The children are very excited about this trip. We will be going in groups of 6 and using our maths skills when we get to the shop to work out what we can buy!

Geography

This week in Geography we have been continuing to learn all about the UK and its countries. For this week our focus has been on examining a famous landmark from each of the countries. (Big Ben, Loch Ness, Giant’s Causeway and Snowdon) Some children were able to recognise some famous landmarks from London and were keen to tell us about their experiences.

Next week we are looking more at our local area of Romford and the types of houses that we live in. We will learn about different types of houses and their physical features.
