Week 1's Learning, Week 1

Week 1's Learning, Week 1

Literacy

Hopefully, your children will have come home this week and told you all about our very exciting new topic 'Scrum-diddly-umptious'! This is a topic that we have done in the past and the current Year 5 children still talk about as they loved it so much!

In literacy this week, the children were told that they might get the opportunity to design and make their own cake. They were beyond excited! In order for them to get the money to buy the ingredients, they had to write Mrs Nicholls' a persuasive letter asking for £1. They explained to her how much learning will take place if they are allowed to do it. They wrote about all the work we will be doing in maths around real life measuring for the ingredients. They told her we are also learning about money and we visit Lidl to buy our ingredients where they will be working out the cost of items. They also told her about all the writing that will be involve as they will be writing their recipe and  shopping list. And on top of all that learning, it would be a fantastic real life Design and Technology project!

The good news is Mrs Nicholls was convinced and the children each have a pound that they can spend at the shops!

Next week we will be looking at different recipes. We will be discussing why it is important that we follow a recipe and also focusing on using verbs in our instruction writing.

Can you name the ingredients? Can you use the key vocabulary below to describe what is happening?

Key Vocabulary: first, then, next, after, finally, cream, mix, beat, stir, sift.

Maths
This week in maths we have been looking at partitioning. This is a way of splitting numbers into smaller parts to make them easier to work with. Partitioning helps support children in their understanding of place value, so they know that 24 is made up of 2 tens and 4 ones. We also practised using a 100 square and knowing where to find the different numbers.

We then took this knowledge and used it to deepen the children’s understanding of money. Money is always tricky topic for young children! But if they know that 24p is made up of 2 tens and 4 pennies, then if helps with the overall concept.

The children really enjoyed using real money to solve addition problems while pretending to pay for items.

Next week we are continuing to work on number and place value. We really want the children to feel confident when using a number square, as this will help them as they move into year 2. We will be playing lots of games such as Find the Number, where we cover up a number and the children have to work out which number is missing!

Key Vocabulary: number, place value, tens, ones, hundred square, crossing the 10s barrier, jump up, jump down, jump forwards, jump backwards.

Outdoor

The children have absolutely loved being outside and learning this week with this amazing weather. This week's focus outside had been improving our bat and ball skills. The children used tennis rackets and pong pong balls to see if they could beat their own score of hitting the ball as many times in a row as they could. They loved competing against themselves

We will be building upon this, working towards the children being able to hit the ball back and forth to each other.

Geography

This week in Geography we have been looking at the countries of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. First of all we looked at a world map and found the UK. Then we found and plotted the UK countries on a map of the UK. We found Harold Hill on the map and talked about big buildings in London such as Big Ben and important people like the Prime Minister and the Queen.

Next week we will be looking at landmarks and physical properties of each of the countries.

Key vocabulary: Big Ben, Tower of London, Loch Ness, Giant’s Causeway, Snowdon, Physical features, landmarks, United Kingdom, UK, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales.

Design and Technology

The children have had a fabulous week designing their cakes. Their ideas have been amazing! They first did their own design after researching cakes on the ipads. Then they realised that they could not buy all of the ingredients with just £1. So they decided to get into groups so they had more money to spend. The groups then combined their idea and mad a huge design altogether!

We look forward to sharing next week's learning with you!
